Mats Zuccarello has finally been properly recognized by the Rangers for his value beyond goals and assists. The 30 year old winger from Norway is now an alternate captain for this upcoming season.

2. More Guts Than His Little Body Can Contain

Zuccarello is not a very big guy. I know, a Captain Obvious moment from me. However, when a teammate is being harassed or dealing with cheap nonsense, Zucc gets all 5’7” of himself in the mix.

3. His Smile and Attitude are Infectious

When it comes to leaders, there are many reasons why people gravitate to them. Mats Zuccarello just has a way to make everyone around him smile.

4. He Helps the Younger Players

One of the key things about leaders, is they lead by example and they are also teachers. This preseason, we saw that in his play with rookie Filip Chytil. Mats Zuccarello spoke glowingly about the kid and explained how he’s there to teach him the ropes. It all culminated in Chytil’s OT winner versus the Islanders.

5. Courage and Determination

Mats Zuccarello’s career almost ended a few seasons ago. He took a slapshot that fractured his skull. His road to recovery is beyond inspirational. His courage and determination are the most important traits in any leader.
