Brennan Othmann named OHL player of the month
The New York Rangers must still be grinning from ear-to-ear knowing they selected Brennan Othmann with their first pick in the 2021 NHL Draft.
For the first time in OHL history, a member of the Flint Firebirds has been named player of the month. The 19 year-old forward earned the honor by scoring 10 goals and a total of 23 points in just 13 contests.
Othmann’s 23 points ranks second in the league (1 point behind Ty Voit). His 10 goals rank him tied for first.

The Blueshirts know they have a gem of a player in Othmann and will likely need to open space for him on the roster next season.
Coming off a 2021-22 campaign where he registered 50 goals and 97 points in 66 games for Flint, he looks like he’ll shatter those numbers.
In October, the captain of the Firebirds posted 10 goals, 13 assists and 23 points in 13 games. He also has notched 8 multi-point games to date and is a +7 on the year.
Othmann was named Rangers top rookie in camp
Before the season started, the New York Rangers announced that Brennan Othmann was named the winner of the Lars-Erik Sjoberg Award as the top rookie in Training Camp as selected by the media.
Othmann registered two assists in two preseason games to earn the award. Both his assists came in the Rangers first exhibition game against the Islanders. He was named first star as the Blueshirts picked up a 4-1 win.
Thanks to an outdated CHL agreement with the NHL, he was ineligible to be sent down to the AHL which took away any flexibility from the Rangers to keep him around. According to the rule, a player must be at least 20 years-old or competed in four seasons of junior hockey before they can be assigned to any NHL minor league affiliate.
“It was great. I learned a lot valuable pro tips that I can bring back here to junior hockey,” Othmann said afterwards. “I kept up with the speed, it’s just the little details. I wanted to go in there and make the team but I knew I wasn’t going to because of their roster right now.”
Othmann signed his entry-level contract with the Rangers on August 12, 2021.
