Rangers defeat Penguins 4-2 to end crazy day at the Garden https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/new-york-rangers-games/rangers-defeat-pittsburgh-penguins-4-2-to-end-crazy-day-at-the-garden Sat, 07 Dec 2024 03:46:23 +0000 https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/?p=457737 The New York Rangers capped a wild day of trades and reported contract extension agreements with a much-needed victory. Reilly Smith broke a tie at 9:53 of the third period, and the Rangers defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-2 at Madison Square Garden on Friday night for just their second win in eight games.

Smith, acquired by the Rangers from the Penguins this summer, ended a 10-game goal drought when he banged the rebound of Mika Zibanejad’s shot past Alex Nedeljkovic, snapping a 2-2 tie. Vincent Trocheck, who assisted on two second-period goals by Artemi Panarin, put the game away when he scored his third goal in four games with 1:38 remaining.

Igor Shesterkin, who according to pregame media reports has agreed to a record-setting contract extension, made 20 saves to end a personal five-game losing streak.

“We needed a win,” Smith told ESPN after the game. “But it’s just one win.”

Before puck drop, the game almost seemed like an afterthought after a day that began with an announcement that captain Jacob Trouba would be held out of the game as a form of “roster management,” followed a few hours later by a trade that sent the veteran defenseman to the Anaheim Ducks. If that wasn’t enough, reports soon began to surface that Shesterkin agreed to an eight-year extension that will make him the highest-paid goaltender in NHL history, a deal carrying an average annual value of $11.5 million — although Shesterkin wouldn’t confirm or deny anything afterward.

“I cannot say anything else.” he said. “Maybe we can talk about it tomorrow.”

Lost in all the hubbub of trades and contracts was that the Rangers had lost six of their previous seven games – and were playing a Penguins team that had won four in a row. The Penguins were also in the mood for revenge after being hammered 6-0 by the Rangers in Pittsburgh on opening night.

Not surprisingly, there was a nervous quiet in the sellout crowd at the Garden when the game began. But it was a happy celebration when the evening was completed.

Rangers cap crazy day by defeating Penguins 4-2

The Rangers had the better of the chances during a scoreless first period that saw them outshoot the Penguins 10-6, but they couldn’t get anything past Nedeljkovic. Smith had a great chance on a one-timer from the right circle that Nedeljkovic went right to left to stop. Shesterkin made his two best stops on close-in tries by Sidney Crosby, who played in his 1,300th NHL game.

Crosby had another good chance early in the second period that was denied by Shesterkin. But after the Rangers killed Pittsburgh’s second power play, Blake Lizotte gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead at 6:19 on a shot that, as ESPN’s Ray Ferraro noted, “Shesterkin has to stop.” Lizotte’s hard but unscreened wrister from the high slot went past Shesterkin’s glove for his fifth goal in 12 games with the Penguins.

But before the Garden could get too gloomy, Panarin tied the game at 7:28. Alexis Lafreniere carried the puck down left wing and found Panarin coming late for a slapper from about 30 feet that beat Nedeljkovic.

“I liked our response,” Rangers coach Peter Laviolette told ESPN. “(Lafreniere) made a great pass.”

Shesterkin atoned for Lizotte’s goal five minutes later and kept the game tied when he robbed Evgeni Malkin with a glove save on what looked like a sure goal.

It looked like the teams would go into the locker room even at 1-1, but Panarin struck for the second time with 1.5 seconds remaining to put the Rangers in front for the first time. This time, Trocheck found Panarin in full flight coming into the offensive zone, and his blast from nearly the same spot as his first goal beat Nedeljkovic cleanly to make it 2-1.

Neither team did much on a power-play chance early in the third period, but Phillip Tomasino tied the game at 8:29, 11 seconds after Zac Jones finished serving a tripping penalty. The Rangers let Tomasino come down the middle alone, and he used K’Andre Miller as a bit of a screen to beat Shesterkin with a perfect wrister to the top left corner for his third goal in five games since being acquired by the Penguins from the Nashville Predators.

But for the second time, the Rangers needed little time to answer back. Smith led a 2-on-1 with Zibanejad; Nedeljkovic stopped two shots but couldn’t get the third one after a wide-open Smith picked up a rebound with the goaltender out of position.

Trocheck’s wrister put the game away, and the cheers that greeted the final buzzer after the Rangers’ best effort in weeks were as much relief as anything else after a day like few others in their recent history.

“It was a very important win for us, for sure,” Shesterkin said. “It was a really tough day. We just need to build our game, be together and play every game step by step.”

New York will try to build on the victory when the Seattle Kraken come to MSG on Sunday afternoon in the first of back-to-back home games, with the Chicago Blackhawks in town on Monday.

Rangers end 5-game losing streak by edging Canadiens 4-3 on Kaapo Kakko’s late goal https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/new-york-rangers-games/rangers-end-5-game-losing-streak-by-edging-canadiens-4-3-on-kaapo-kakkos-late-goal Sat, 30 Nov 2024 21:20:44 +0000 https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/?p=457441 The New York Rangers ended their five-game losing streak when Kaapo Kakko scored a power-play goal with 24 seconds remaining for a 4-3 victory against the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday at Madison Square Garden in the opener of a five-game homestand.

Montreal trailed 3-1 entering the third period but made it a one-goal game when Cole Caufield scored at 4:16 and tied it 3-3 at 14:07 when Nick Suzuki, who set up Caufield’s goal, took a pass from defenseman Mike Matheson and put the puck into a half-empty net. Both goals came after the Rangers were unable to clear the zone, a problem for much of the afternoon.

The Rangers were hanging on for dear life until Montreal’s Kirby Dach was assessed a double minor for high-sticking Mika Zibanejad with 2:40 to play. They generated almost nothing for more than two minutes until Will Cuylle controlled the puck in the slot and made a behind-the-back pass to Kakko, who whipped a quick shot past Sam Montembeault for the Rangers’ third power-play goal of the game to earn their 1,700th home victory since entering the NHL in 1926.

“Not our best performance,” forward Artemi Panarin said, “but right now, we needed something.”

It was a big day for the power play, which got a boost from the return of Chris Kreider from a bout of back spasms that cost him three games. Jonathan Quick made 25 saves for his 398th NHL win, the most by any U.S.-born goalie. He won for the fifth time in his six starts. The Rangers also played with the kind of feistiness they rarely exhibited during their slide, especially during a docile 3-1 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday.

Panarin and Mika Zibanejad each had a goal and an assist to lead the offense, which also got a goal from Vincent Trocheck.

For most of the day, the Rangers, who also got No. 3 center Filip Chytil back after he missed seven games with an upper-body injury, looked much more like the team that started the season 5-0-1 than the one that was 7-9-0 in the next 16 games, including five losses in a nine-day span.

It was far from a perfect effort – the Canadiens had a 15-6 edge in high-danger chances at 5-on-5, including 10-3 in the second period, according to Natural Stat Trick, and there were far too many defensive breakdowns, especially in the third period. But there was definitely a lot more life in the Rangers after a lifeless performance in Philadelphia 24 hours earlier.

“Sometimes when you’re trying to get out of something, that first one that you get out of might not be the prettiest,” coach Peter Laviolette said. “It wasn’t tonight. We have to draw on the positives of what we were able to do from the physicality at the start, the fact that we kicked it up, we came back and we won it. Specialty teams factored into it. I think you just pull all those things out of it and just continue to work your way out.”

They did just that.

New York Rangers 4 – Montreal Canadiens 3

The Rangers came out with the kind of energy they rarely showed during the losing streak. Captain Jacob Trouba sent a message to his team when he engaged in a lengthy fight with Montreal forward Josh Anderson 1:50 after the opening face-off, and the Rangers controlled play for most of the first half of the period.

“He’s our leader,” Kakko said. “It was something we needed. We’ve been pretty bad lately.”

After earning just 12 power plays (and failing to convert on any of them) in their previous eight games, the Rangers got two in a minute when Emil Heineman was called for holding Kreider at 7:22 and Matheson was sent off at 8:22 when his clearing attempt went over the glass for a delay of game penalty. They capitalized on the 5-on-3 advantage at 9:02 when Panarin ripped a shot from above the left circle that Montembeault never saw because of Kreider’s screen for a 1-0 lead.

But the Canadiens needed just 2:45 to tie the game. After Montreal hemmed the Rangers in their own zone for the better part of a minute, Brendan Gallagher found Matheson alone in the middle of the offensive zone, and he fired a wrister from the high slot past Quick at 11:47 to make it 1-1.

The Rangers killed off two Montreal power plays before taking a 2-1 lead with 2.3 seconds left in the period. Trocheck scored for the second time in as many days when he got a piece of Alexis Lafreniere’s long wrister and deflected it past Montembeault.

New York limited the Canadiens to seven shots in the opening period; the Rangers had allowed at least 13 first-period shots in each of the five losses during the streak.

Montreal came out with more jump in the second and forced Quick to make three saves in the first 30 seconds, including two in-close on Alex Newhook. The Rangers also had to kill a third Montreal power play after Sam Carrick was sent off for unsportsmanlike conduct at 2:26 for going back at Arber Xhekaj for a hit on Lafreniere. Quick came up big again midway through the period when Dach and Joshua Roy had good chances during a scramble.

Anderson took a needless roughing penalty at 16:14, and the Rangers made them pay at 17:03 when Zibanejad got his fifth goal of the season and first on the power play. He took a feed from Panarin above the left circle, slid a stride or two toward the slot and rifled a wrist shot that went past Montembeault, who again had Kreider screening him.

NHL: Montreal Canadiens at New York Rangers
John Jones-Imagn Images

The Rangers got another power play after a scrum involving all 10 skaters and Quick resulted in the Canadiens getting the extra roughing minor. Unlike Friday, when Panarin’s teammates made no effort to get involved after he was jabbed by the Flyers’ Travis Konecny, all five Rangers came to the aid of their goaltender in a scrum that lasted several minutes.

But the Rangers couldn’t convert on the opportunity, and the Canadiens got within one goal at 4:16. Suzuki kept the puck in at the blue line and quickly fed Caufield in the left circle for a quick shot that got through Quick to make it 3-2. They tied it with 5:53 left in regulation when Suzuki converted a pass from Matheson after the Rangers again could not clear the zone.

But the Rangers did something they haven’t done enough of recently. They found a way. And Kakko’s late goal was the difference.

Looking for a second straight win, the Rangers continue their homestand Monday when they take up in class and host the New Jersey Devils.

3 Rangers takeaways from disappointing 3-2 loss to Flames https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/new-york-rangers-games/3-takeaways-loss-flames Fri, 22 Nov 2024 14:34:52 +0000 https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/?p=457005 Igor Shesterkin gave the New York Rangers a chance to steal a win against the Calgary Flames at Scotiabank Saddledome on Thursday night. But despite his brilliant 46-save performance, the Rangers came up a goal short, losing 3-2.

Connor Zary’s tie-breaking goal midway through the third period broke a 2-2 tie as the Flames won their third in a row and ended New York’s three-game winning streak.

The 49 shots allowed and 46 saves by Shesterkin were season highs. Calgary outshot the Rangers 49-29, but a better indication of the play was the shot attempts – Calgary out-attempted New York 90-53. The first-period numbers were even worse – the Flames had a 20-5 edge in shots on goal and a 34-11 margin in attempts.

“They came out hard,” defenseman Ryan Lindgren said postgame. “They were all over us. They were forechecking us hard. We didn’t do a good job of getting the puck out, and when we did get it out, we weren’t getting it in. We were turning it over and they were coming right back at us.”

The Rangers trailed 2-0 before tying the game by scoring twice in 16 seconds late in the second period, with Alexis Lafreniere firing home a rebound at 16:37 and Will Cuylle tipping a shot by K’Andre Miller at 16:53. But those were the only shots to get past Flames goalie Dustin Wolf, who did his best work early in the third period when the Rangers generated a consistent attack for one of the few times all night.

“We fought, ended up tying it up, but didn’t get it done in the third,” Lindgren added.

But it was their play in the opening period, not the third, that left some Rangers shaking their heads.

“We weren’t doing anything right in the first period,” Cuylle said. “I thought we were pretty bad. They outplayed us all 20 minutes.”

The Rangers wrap up their four-game trip Saturday night in Edmonton against the Oilers before returning home to host the St. Louis Blues on Monday.

3 takeaways from Rangers 3-2 road loss to Flames

Here are three takeaways from the game Thursday.

1. Shesterkin shines again

The Rangers gave their No. 1 goalie little help, and he still almost stole two points.

Calgary outshot the Rangers by 20 and out-attempted them by 37. The shots on goal were 32-8 at the first TV timeout in the second period, and the Flames outplayed New York for all but the last few minutes of the second period and the opening minutes of the third.

But Shesterkin’s superb play gave them an opportunity to win. Even after allowing Zary’s go-ahead goal, he kept it a one-shot game with a number of excellent stops.

“He was fantastic,” defenseman Jacob Trouba said. “He made a lot of big saves, especially in the first period. He was great throughout, and he gave us a chance.”

2. Another slow start

Were it not for Shesterkin, the Rangers would have been run out of the Saddledome early.

The Flames were all over the visitors in the opening period, outshooting them 20-5 and attempting 34 shots to 11. The Rangers generated nothing offensively and were on their heels. Per Natural Stat Trick, the Rangers had a pitiful 13.8 percent xGF.

“We got outworked,” an unhappy coach Peter Laviolette said. “They were better than us in the first.”

The Rangers really didn’t get going until late in the second period. They trailed 2-0 when the offense finally put some pressure on Wolf and got goals by Lafreniere and Cuylle to tie the score.

“I don’t think we ever got to our top game,” Trouba said. “We’d been playing pretty well on the road trip and we let one get away from us.”

3. Kakko looks comfortable in the middle

With No. 3 center Filip Chytil still out with an upper-body injury, Laviolette has been looking for a replacement. During the second period, he called on Kaapo Kakko, the regular right wing on the third line, to play in the middle.

NHL: New York Rangers at Vancouver Canucks

Kakko played just 9:35 but looked comfortable after being put between Cuylle and Jimmy Vesey. His face-off win led to Cuylle’s game-tying goal, and he won six of his nine draws.

“It’s just something that we had talked about,” Laviolette said of moving Kakko to the middle. “The opportunity presented itself, so we went with it tonight. … He was good. He played center prior to getting to the NHL

“He’s pretty good in the face-off circle, and they produced a goal for us to tie the game.”

The move came at the expense of Jonny Brodzinski, who started at center on the third line but played only 7:58, and had only three short shifts in the third period.

Filip Chytil shines for Rangers in 3-2 preseason win against Bruins https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/new-york-rangers-games/3-2-preseason-win-bruins-recap Mon, 23 Sep 2024 01:19:11 +0000 https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/?p=454720 There are few question marks in a New York Rangers lineup that’s returning nearly all its personnel from last season’s Presidents’ Trophy-winning squad.

One question, though, is whether Filip Chytil can remain healthy and recapture his form of two seasons ago.

But if his performance in New York’s 3-2 victory in its preseason opener against the Boston Bruins at TD Garden on Sunday is any indication of where he’s at, Chytil just may have some positive answers in store this season.

Chytil was head and shoulders the best player on the ice for either side in Boston. He scored on the power play in the first period and assisted on Alex Belzile’s game-winning goal in the third period. He also won 56 percent of his face-offs, had a game-high six shots on goal and logged 22:34 in ice time.

The 25-year-old missed nearly the entire regular season in 2023-24; he was limited to 10 games with a suspected concussion. He did return six months after his Nov. 2 injury, midway through the Stanley Cup Playoffs. But while his re-entry in the lineup was an emotional lift, Chytil was held pointless in six postseason contests.

Chytil said the other day he’s “100 percent ready to work” and is “not scared of any contact” after a rigorous offseason program.

A healthy Chytil adds scoring depth to a Rangers team that lacked it throughout the regular season from its bottom six and in the latter stages of the postseason. On Sunday, his linemates were Kaapo Kakko and Will Cuylle, and that threesome likely will make up the Rangers third line when the regular season begins.

Cuylle picked up an assist, playing nearly 20 minutes. Kakko had two shots on goal, playing more than 22 minutes.

Victor Mancini — courtesy Hartford Wolf Pack

The Rangers’ lineup Sunday had few NHL regulars outside of the Chytil line. That was especially so on defense, where Braden Schneider was the only blueliner who saw significant time in New York last season.

But that allowed Victor Mancini to show coach Peter Laviolette and company what he brings to the table. The 22-year-old defenseman opened the scoring for the Rangers with a wrist shot that tied the game 1-1 at 10:23 of the first period.

The 2022 fifth-round pick — who also picked up an assist on Chytil’s goal and logged 23:06 in ice time — has had a strong start to camp, setting himself up nicely for his first full season of pro hockey with Hartford in the American Hockey League.

Mancini already made a solid first impression late last season when he joined Hartford after finishing his collegiate career at the University of Nebraska-Omaha and then took a regular role in the Wolf Pack’s top four on defense in the Calder Cup Playoffs.

Chytil’s power-play goal at 18:47 of the first period broke the tie, and his feed to Belzile gave the Rangers a 3-2 lead 4:46 into the final frame.

Louis Domingue and Dylan Garand split the duties in goal for the Rangers. Domingue started and allowed one goal on 15 shots in 30:18. Garand picked up the win, allowing one goal on 13 shots.

Though held off the score sheet, 2021 first-round pick Brennan Othmann was noticeable on the physical side of things. He had two big hits and picked up a fighting major at the end of the second period. The 21-year-old forward had one shot on goal in 13:18 of ice time.

Next up, the Rangers host the Islanders at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night in the first home game of the preseason.

Rangers vs. Bruins: 3 things to watch for preseason opener https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/new-york-rangers-games/rangers-bruins-preseason-opener-preview Sun, 22 Sep 2024 15:25:44 +0000 https://www.foreverblueshirts.com/?p=454684 After only three training camp practices, the New York Rangers hit the ice for their first preseason game Sunday against the Boston Bruins at TD Garden. Although much of the varsity roster remained back home scrimmaging at the Rangers’ Tarrytown facility, there’s still plenty of intrigue and excitement surrounding New York’s first game of any sort since being eliminated by the Florida Panthers in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Final more than three months ago.

What happened at the morning scrimmage is likely of more importance to what lies ahead for the 2024-25 season than what takes place up in Boston. For what it’s worth, Igor Shesterkin’s white team defeated Jonathan Quick’s blue squad 4-3, despite nearly letting a 4-1 lead slip away.

But what happens when the Rangers visit the Bruins is also important.

“It’s an evaluation process,” Rangers coach Peter Laviolette said Saturday. “You want to go out there and play the game the right way. You want to show what our team can do. It’s training camp so it’s an evaluation period, an evaluation process. While we’ll be missing some of the bigger names, there’s a chance for players to go out, put on the New York Rangers jersey, represent the organization and show what we can do.”

3 things to watch for when Rangers play Bruins in preseason opener

NHL: Stanley Cup Playoffs-Tampa Bay Lightning at New York Rangers
Filip Chytil and Kaapo Kakko – Dennis Schneidler-Imagn Images

So, let’s breakdown three things to watch late Sunday afternoon.

1. Spotlight on Kaapo Kakko, Filip Chytil

Kaapo Kakko and Filip Chytil are among the familiar names making the trip to Boston. It’s the first opportunity for each player to put last season behind him and chart a positive course for 2024-25.

Kakko missed 21 games with a lower-body injury last season, failed to create any chemistry playing with Mika Zibanejad and Chris Kreider, was dropped to the third line and finished with just 13 goals and 19 points. That was before he scored one goal in 15 postseason games and was a healthy scratch early in the conference final.

The 23-year-old said he’s thrilled to remain with the Rangers after offseason trade rumors and is primed to get his career back on track. He’ll skate on the third line with a healthy Chytil and Will Cuylle on Sunday, and likely when the regular season begins.

Chytil missed all but 10 games last season with an upper-body injury believed to be a concussion, the third or fourth of his career. The 25-year-old did return after a six-month absence and played six postseason games without generating a point. He’s starting fresh, trying to recapture his 22-goal, 45-point form from two seasons ago.

All eyes will be on Kaako and Chytil against the Bruins.

2. Brennan Othmann looks to make most of opportunity

Since camp started, Brennan Othmann has skated with the junior varsity, if you will. He wasn’t included in the scrimmage Sunday, so he will get a chance to show his stuff in game action instead. Othmann likely needs to blow away Rangers coaches and management these next couple of weeks to earn a roster spot. That process begins against the Bruins.

The 21-year-old forward scored 21 goals last season with Hartford of the American Hockey League and needs to land a top-nine spot to crack the roster. He’s not battling Matt Rempe and Adam Edstrom for a fourth-line role. It’s top top nine or back to Hartford for the 2021 first-round pick.

Laviolette said this week that there’s always room for someone to surprise and shove his way on to the roster, even one as deep as New York’s. Let’s see how much Othmann can move that needle on Sunday.

3. Different look against Bruins

NHL: Preseason-New York Rangers at Boston Bruins
Connor Mackey — Eric Canha-Imagn Images

Since most of the players expected to be on the opening-night roster remained back in New York, the Rangers roster look will have a different look for their preseason opener against the Bruins.

The Rangers have yet to announce their game roster, but it’s expected that along with Kakko, Chytil and Cuylle, forwards Jimmy Vesey and Jonny Brodzinski will play against the Bruins. As should defenseman Braden Schneider.

The goalies are expected to be the 1-2 punch from Hartford, veteran Louis Domingue and Dylan Garand, the 22-year-old who’s entering his third professional season.

“It’s a little bit too early for me,” Laviolette said after Sunday’s scrimmage when asked why Domingue and Garand made the trip while Shesterkin and Quick stayed home. “I’d rather get them work here and have them work on their game.

“Eventually, if we get down to (preseason games) 4-5-6 and we’re on the road, I’m fine with that. But it’s a little too early in camp.”

Along with Othmann, other familiar names like defensemen Connor Mackey, Ben Harpur and Casey Fitzgerald are expected to play.

Check back here for updates on the Rangers lineup against the Bruins.
