Katie Strang of ESPN had a phone interview with former Rangers captain and defenseman, Brian Leetch. Within that conversation the topic of next Rangers captain was broached and Leetch’s endorsement was clear – Ryan McDonagh.

“If (Ryan McDonagh) is given the captaincy, it won’t change his approach in how he interacts with his teammates. I think it’s a natural thing and I agree he seems to be a logical choice. He’s a main guy for the foreseeable future.”

Leetch also stated that the top three blue-liners of McDonagh along with Marc Staal and Dan Girardi have been together awhile and share leadership responsibilities.

Katie also captured this excellent quote from the Rangers greatest defenseman of all-time:

“When Mark left and I was named captain, I was proud of that. I was disappointed why [it happened] — with Mark not being re-signed — but I was very proud to wear the Rangers jersey and wear the ‘C.'”

So there you have it, Brian Leetch said what we all have been thinking and discussing since Ryan Callahan was traded. Now, will Alain Vigneault do it?
