Kevin Hayes career as a Flyer may be getting off to a rocky start already

Hayes (NYR)

I mentioned this here and on various social media outlets, August is the dog days of summer for hockey fans AND hockey writers. However, things got very interesting for one former Ranger; Kevin Hayes.

Overpay Controversy

TSN Insider, Frank Servalli was on a podcast and stated someone who knows Kevin well informed him that the only way he would sign with the Flyers is if they overpay.

When this news got out there, Ryan Whitney who is a cohost of the popular Spittin’ Chiclets podcast tweeted on the situation. That also prompted a reply from Seravalli.

Regardless if it’s true or not, this certainly puts Kevin Hayes in a bad spot. Many around the league felt the Flyers did overpay for his services. If Hayes gets off to a rough start, the fans in Philly (who have long memories) won’t make it any easier for him to get out of the slump.

Sound off below.

I know it’s August and this is the slowest point of a hockey season but how is this even an issue even in Philly? It’s not the first time a person went to work at a place they may or may not even like for more money. We all have taken positions or jobs we wouldn’t have taken if they didn’t offer more money.

I doubt Flyer fans are shocked they overspent on a player they outbid themselves on, they have a history of it. Nobody in the league would have come close to the contract, if so Hayes would have waited til unrestricted free agency.

So glad he is off this team…. no longer have to suffer those interviews where he sounds half asleep with a mouth full of marbles.

It will not end well in PHI for either Hayes or AV. My guess is they fire AV and buy-out Hayes in the same summer about 3 seasons from now.

Funny, I felt the same way when they shipped overrated Stepan behind to the middle of the desert lol.

it’s going to be painful when we have to watch Hayes score 5v5, PP and shorthanded point’s against our favorite team. AV’s system will rip apart this team on a daily basis. Skjei/Trouba will be the league’s most overrated 2nd pair.

Painful is to watch Hayes play on a team you follow. The opposition never loses sleep over a career 45 pt per year player.

You know it’s bad when you have to write about someone else’s player and their perceived value. Right now, the overall vibe to Hayes is that most Philly fans are pump about him and realize they prob have one of the most underrated 1-2 punch in their top 6. It will be able match up against any elite team’s like Toronto and Tampa while exposing any weak-average top 9 center corps.

I guess this article is a nice filler instead of imagining Chytil or Howden as the 2c.

S&W, Ranger fans were pumped to get him to after they signed him coming out of college. Not to many tees were shed when he left. How pump were Winnipeg fans when they acquired Hayes? He really won their hearts with his gallant playoff effort. Hayes shines when there is little pressure and doesn’t show up at all when the bright lights are shinning.

Hayes will not give the ability to match up against teams like Toronto or Tampa. In a matchup who would you rather have Hayes or Tavares when they match up vs Toronto. He doesn’t fare any better vs Brayden Point either. The Flyers will be better down the middle by not moving Giroux to wing and keep him at center with Coutieire as their 3C.

GREED always rears it’s ugly head. Every person needs to face themselves and man-up to what they do in life. These players have it made, they get big money for many years and then some don’t even live up to their contracts. But their attitudes are many times are like: I got my money for 6-7 years guaranteed so who cares. We fans are the ones who suffer from owners and players GREED! The HELL with both of them. I for one am getting sick of it.

Hayes is not greedy, he’s just maximizing his fiscal opportunity. The NHL is not like other sports when it comes to their contracts….the top earner in the NHL is only about 16M but in the other major sports, MLB/NFL/NBA, its more than double that! Think about it…..and his 6-7M per yr for a top FA center is less than the NBA Mid Level Exemption!! Also, NHL player often play through injuries that would sideline players in other sports. As a die hard NYR fan, I will not miss him on our team but with the hard salary cap, its almost impossible for a player to be greedy. In this case the team offered him a contract and he took it…..what would you expect him to do? Pass??
