Nail Yakupov available for cheap, will the Rangers add their 9th former 1st overall pick?

If the Rangers ever wanted to scratch that itch for acquiring another failed or washed up 1st overall pick with limitless potential, this could be that time. According to the Edmonton Journal and Spector’s Hockey, Nail Yakupov could be had this summer for a song.

Matheson claims a deal that was proposed at the trade deadline was the Oilers shipping Nail Yakupov to the New Jersey Devils for defenseman Eric Gelina, who was eventually dealt to Colorado for a third-round pick. SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Oilers will be fortunate to get a second-round pick for Yakupov at this point. I also wouldn’t rule out his being swapped for another disappointing young forward. He could even end up part of a package deal. – Via Spector’s Hockey

The list is long for the Blueshirts with just two moderate successes in Rick Nash and Eric Lindros. They also locked up the early 90’s obtaining 3 straight former 1st overallers from 91-93. Finally, on the list is also 1 major bust in Brian Lawton, whom the Rangers traded away fan favorite defenseman, Mark Tinordi for. Talk about a bad trade.

Alexandre Daigle was in NY but not only did he fail to stick, he failed to bring Pam Anderson to the Garden (when she was hot).

If the Rangers do acquire Yakupov, it would be the quickest they were ever able to obtain a former 1st round pick, beating out Lawton’s 5 year removal by 1.
