Amazing New York Rangers stats of 2023
At the start of 2024, the New York Rangers are sitting atop the NHL standings with 51 points. Considering this year marks the 30th anniversary of the last Stanley Cup parade down the Canyon of Heroes, New York is playing at the same level as the 1993-94 squad, which had 55 points to begin the new year in 1994.
However, before we get ahead of ourselves, there is still a lot to celebrate regarding the Rangers and their performance in 2023, so here’s a look inside the team’s most eye-popping statistics from the previous calendar year.

Inside the Numbers: A Look Back at the 2023 New York Rangers
103 – Artemi Panarin played in 87 games (including playoffs) in 2023, collecting 43 goals and 60 assists for 103 points, the most by any Rangers player in the lineup. Overall, he produced a 1.18 points-per-game average.
87 – New York skated in 87 games during the calendar year, compiling a 56-23-8 record, including 3-4 in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Interestingly, the team’s best stretch included a seven-game win streak from Jan. 27 to Feb. 17, with the longest losing streak reaching four games from Feb. 18 to Mar. 25. The team has accumulated 114 regular season points.
71 – During Game 2 of the first-round playoff series against the New Jersey Devils, the two teams had a rowdy contest, with the Rangers getting seven power play opportunities when the Devils took a season-high 71 penalty minutes. During the 5-1 victory, New York tallied two powerplay goals.
65 – As mentioned, Game 2 was the most undisciplined the Rangers were all year, earning a season-high 65 minutes and gifting the Devils five powerplay opportunities. Surprisingly, Adam Fox, Barclay Goodrow, and Niko Mikkola led the team with 12 minutes, while Tyler Motte and Jimmy Vesy each had 10 minutes, accounting for 86% of the team’s infractions.
56 – The Rangers collected 56 wins (53 regular season) in 2023, one of franchise history’s best statistical calendar years.
56 – Thanks to skaters like Panarin, Mika Zibanejad, and Chris Kreider, the Rangers employ one of the best powerplay units in the NHL, which is how the team scored at least one man advantage goal in 56 of 87 games.
51 – During their contest with the Winnipeg Jets at Madison Square Garden on Feb. 20, New York fired 51 shots on Connor Hellebuyck, who made 50 saves to preserve a 4-1 victory. Six skaters had at least four shots, with Vincent Trocheck leading the pack with eight. Meanwhile, the Jets registered just 21 shots in the victory.
43 – In 2023, the Rangers only gave up 40 or more shots in three contests, with the Devils claiming the top two spots with 43 on Jan. 7 and Game 5 of their playoff series on Apr. 27. Interestingly, New Jersey picked up 4-3 (OT) and 4-0 wins in those contests.
38 – Igor Shesterkin was the busiest Rangers goalie in 2023, skating in 52 games and picking up 38 wins, equalling a .730 win percentage.
34 – New York collected just three shutouts during the year, with Shesterkin making a season-high 34 saves for a shutout win in a 6-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins at The Garden on Mar. 18.
27 – Although scoring five goals in a contest is not the team’s best single-game total in 2023, the Rangers did score at least that many in 27 contests, going a perfect 27-0-0 when lighting the lamp that many times. Interestingly, when scoring at least four goals, they had a 42-0-1 record, with their only blemish coming at the hands of the Minnesota Wild on Nov. 4.
23 – New York lost 23 games in 2023, including four games to the Devils in the Stanley Cup playoffs opening round. Moreover, the Hudson River rivals had the best record against the Rangers, going 6-4 in the ten meetings.
15 – In 2023, the Blueshirts played in 21 games that required extra time, including 15 overtime contests where they compiled an 8-7 record in 3-on-3 play while improving to 4-2 in shootouts.
8 – Surprisingly, New York was shut out three times in 2023, twice by the Devils (Apr. 27 and May 1) and once by the Washington Capitals (Dec. 9). Meanwhile, the Rangers blanked the Penguins (Mar. 18 and Nov. 22), Nashville Predators (Mar. 19), Columbus Blue Jackets (Apr. 8), and Edmonton Oilers (Oct. 26) to participate in eight shutout contests.
7 – The number seven was a crazy statistic for the Rangers in 2023, as it was the most goals scored in a single game, which they achieved on two separate occasions against the Nashville Predators (Mar. 19) and the Boston Bruins (Nov. 25). However, it was also part of their worse performance of the year when the Toronto Maple Leafs beat them 7-3 on Nov. 12 on Garden ice.
6 – As mentioned, the Rangers were busy playing a lot of extra hockey in 2023, including six shootout games. Statistically, the skaters went 8-for-22 in the one-on-one contest, with Alexis Lafreniere going a perfect 2-for-2, while Zibanejad had the most attempts, going 1-for-6.
5 – The Rangers are a lethal club on special teams, whether they make opponents pay with powerplay goals or shorthanded lamplighters. Interestingly, the team had five games in 2023 against the Montreal Canadiens, Seattle Kraken, Oilers, Buffalo Sabres, and Bruins when they collected at least one man advantage goal and a shorthanded tally on the same night.
5 – Unsurprisingly, Panarin had the best game of the year for the Rangers, collecting a team-high five points in a game against the Carolina Hurricanes on Feb. 11 with four goals and an assist to become the only New York skater to tally four goals in a game last year.
3 – There was only one player on the Rangers who tallied a hat trick in 2023: Panarin, who collected three. On Feb. 11, he earned his first career four-goal game against the Hurricanes before netting three goals against the San Jose Sharks (Dec. 3) and most recently against the Tampa Bay Lightning (Dec. 30).
1 – New York was awarded just one penalty shot in 2023, which took place during a 6-5 win over the Sharks on Dec. 3. In the second period, Matt Benning was whistled for interference on a breakaway, allowing Lafreniere to take the team’s only penalty shot in the calendar year against Mackenzie Blackwood, who made the save.
