Brassard learned about trade via text from Marty St. Louis and Zuccarello’s goodbye
If you’re looking for my take on the trade, you can read all about that here. This post is focused on the human aspects of the trade. We sometimes forget about the personal side of hockey and the impact it has on a person’s everyday life.
Seriously, it’s not like the guy from Fed-Ex wakes up and gets a call that he’s just been traded to UPS for Bob and a hand-truck.
How Brassard Found Out
Jeff Gorton and others tried calling Brassard first, but couldn’t reach him. So first message he saw about trade was from St. Louis.

[su_quote cite=”Brassard via the Ottawa Citizen” url=”https://ottawacitizen.com/sports/hockey/nhl/senatorsextra/sens-trade-zibanejad-to-rangers-for-derick-brassard-draft-picks”]“I was a little shocked when it happened, but I’m really happy to be joining the Senators and to be playing at home…There’s pressure everywhere you’re going to play in this league. I’ve played in New York for the last three years and that was a lot of pressure. It means a lot to me to be able to play for my hometown team. My family lives across the water (Ottawa River) and I have a house in Ottawa. I’m excited to join the Senators and I want to be a big part of the team.”[/su_quote]
