Rangers prospect Brennan Othmann wants Petes championship, play in NHL next season

New York Rangers 2021 first-round Draft pick Brennan Othmann was formally introduced on Tuesday by the Peterborough Petes after being traded late Saturday night from the Flint Firebirds.

The two teams just finished playing a game with Othmann wrapping up a two-game suspension when the deal was announced. He then made his way over to his new locker room introducing himself to his new team and then debuted just one day later in a loss to Saginaw.

“It was a quick turnaround (after the trade),” Othmann said via the Petes’ FB video. “I got to meet the guys for 10 minutes after the game in Flint. It was a good game against Saginaw but not the result we wanted. They play a lot different than the way Flint does so it was good to get my feet wet.”

Now that he’s had a chance to settle into his new surroundings, Othmann took time to address media questions regarding the trade.

Othmann, 19, scored 50 goals and 97 points in 66 games for the Firebirds in 2021-22. This season, Othmann is off to a great with 11 goals and 24 points in 17 games on 85 shots. He should be able to surpass his previous career-highs playing on Peterborough’s top line. Of course, when asked about what he hopes to accomplish with the Petes it was all about winning.

“My focus is on the team goals and I want to win a championship. It’s what I set out to do at 16 years old,” Othmann revealed. “For me, it’s about learning how to be a pro and I want to play in the NHL next year. Right now, I’m a Pete and the goal is to win a championship and a Memorial Cup.”

The Petes have a rich history which includes 9 OHL titles and have the most Memorial Cup appearances in the CHL with 9. They’ve won it once back in 1979.

“I want to learn from coach Rob (Wilson) and from different players around the league,” Othmann added. “I’ve played with a lot of pressure in the past and it’s not a big deal to me. I’ve played in a lot of pressure games and I’ve come up big in those moments.”

Othmann requested the trade from Flint, who were happy to oblige understanding this would be his final season in the OHL. He will definitely be competing for a spot on the Rangers roster next season, and even if he doesn’t make it out of camp, he’ll report to their AHL affiliate the Hartford Wolf Pack.

So there’s a lot on the line for both Othmann and the Petes to succeed in their lofty goals this OHL season.

What was also important to Brennan in choosing the Petes was their close proximity to home.

“It’s about a 50 minute drive from Pickering so it’s not too bad and I wanted to be close to home,” Othamann explained. “Over the years I’ve been playing a lot of hockey around the world and my family hasn’t seen too many games. It was a big reason why I wanted to come here. They’re pretty excited.”

Othmann will wear #8 for the Petes, which was worn by former Rangers player Tie Domi when he was there.

“I did not know that,” Othmann chuckled. “It’s a good fact to learn.”
