Brian Boyle: A Wanted Man
July 1st is coming and Brian Boyle is going! The harsh reality is starting to settle in that “good guy” and “heart & soul” Ranger is on his way out of town.
You have to wonder if Glen Sather didn’t make a huge mistake with the big man? He spent much of last season (and rightfully so) locking down extensions for Ryan McDonagh, Henrik Lundqvist and Dan Girardi. Sather also got consumed with trying to re-sign Ryan Callahan and Anton Stralman, both failed. It’s a shame he didn’t give Boyle some of the same attention.
When the trade deadline rolled around this past year, Brian Boyle was scared stiff that he would be moved. Well that time has come and gone and now he wants a bigger role and more money. “I know what my role would be coming back here. In the playoffs and on a team that’s going to win in May and June, it’s an important role. But everybody wants to score more goals.”
The not so subtle hint-hint is the writing on the wall for the 6’7″ man from Massachusetts. Unfortunately, the Rangers didn’t feel the same way on break up day.
“Players have to decide if they’re satisfied with what they’re being given, but his 12 to 14 minutes a game that he’s getting, they’re huge minutes. Some players don’t see it, but they’re huge minutes to teams having success and I’m hoping that he sees that.” Those were the words of Alain Vigneault and may very well be Boyle’s eulogy as a member of the Rangers.
So, what does the rest of the league think of Brian Boyle? Detroit’s head man Mike Babcock had this to say back in October. “Boyle always impresses me. He came to New York and became a good player.”
The rumor mill is churning as teams all look to get deeper down the middle. Vancouver, Chicago and St. Louis are all eyeing the big man. His current salary of 1.7 million is sure to double, and the promise of a more prominent role will aid in Boyle’s decision.
Maybe Brian Boyle believes he is a 20 goal scorer in the NHL. He had one season in 2010-11 where he broke 20 goals, but he’s never come close again since.
Yet, Brian Boyle makes an impact in place many don’t see and that has value. Vigneault said during the season, “He definitely has an impact on our dressing room. He knows the culture of the New York Rangers. He wants to be here.”
July 1st is fast approaching and suitors will come calling. The Rangers have finally bought out Brad Richards and have some spending cash but a lot of players to sign. Glen Sather will certainly offer Boyle more money, but will it be enough? Is the role enough for Boyle too?
If he really wants to be here, we will find out in less than 2 weeks!
