Dominic Moore’s Heart, Katie Moore
At this time of year, entire Cities, fans, players immerse themselves in the NHL Playoffs.
We get lost in the excitement and the thrill of possibly winning the Stanley Cup. During the playoffs of 2012, one man walked away from it. Dominic Moore, now back in the big dance with the New York Rangers left his team the Sharks, to be with his dying wife.
Katie was “the most beautiful girl on campus” recalls Dominic. On a special E:60 episode, Moore sat down with ESPN’s Jeremy Schaap to talk about the love of his life. The episode aired this past Thursday (4/24) at 7 pm.
The two fell in love at Harvard in 2003 and spent 6 years moving from place to place to make it work. They married in 2010 and not long after, Katie would die of a rare liver cancer at the young age of 32. He wanted to be with her, to let her know how proud he was of her for battling cancer. He stayed with her until she took her last breath.
Today, Dominic Moore is the founder of the Katie Moore Foundation. He started it to honor his wife and to help families dealing with rare forms of cancer. During the piece for E:60 he said, “She’s … she’s … 100 percent of my life. Not only her example, but her presence is with me, 100 percent of the time, all the time.”
We see that heart in every shift he takes for the Rangers this post season. Now back in the place where he and Katie started it all after college, it has come full circle. For Dominic, he still dreams of winning the Stanley Cup. If the Rangers can accomplish the feat, they all get to lift the Cup over their heads high. Given the chance, Moore would raise the Cup over his head to the heavens, allowing Katie a touch.
