Exclusive: Rangers and Lemieux talking but still not close to a deal
Earlier today I wrote on the importance of Brendan Lemieux to the future success of the Rangers. In the post I noted that I reached out to 4SportsWorld for an update on contract negotiations. Claude Lemieux, Brendan’s father and agent returned my request and provided the following update.
“I have had a few conversations with the Rangers management team but I can’t say that we are close to signing a new contract.” I also wanted Claude’s perspective on his son playing in one of the NHL’s best rivalries. Lemieux said, “I think it’s awesome to see him experience the Rangers – Devils rivalry from the other side of the river!” The exchange concluded with this final thought, “He is a great fit for that young club and he hopes to be part of the rebuild for many years.”
The Rangers made the qualifying offer weeks ago, and currently need to see if there are any other moves to make before finalizing contracts with either Lemieux or Tony DeAngelo. Cap space is tight and Jeff Gorton would most likely rather have both key young players signed to two or three year deals rather than a one.
