Filip Chytil looking to take scoring to another level for Rangers
Filip Chytil has spent the better part of six seasons slowly emerging into the scoring threat many expected after being selected 21st overall in 2017.
At the time, many experts felt the New York Rangers took him too early. For several years, it seemed like they were right, as the Czechia native struggled with a lot of the physical aspects of the game in North America.
Over the past few seasons, Chytil has learned to use his 6-2′, 204 lbs frame to his advantage. By better protecting the puck and using his size to get into prime scoring areas, it led to a career year in 2022-23.
The 24 year-old netted 22 goals and totaled 45 points in 74 games, but believes he’s primed for more.
“I know that I can score goals. I had a lot of chances, I didn’t score many of them and I scored over 20 goals (last year),” Chytil said via NY Post’s Mollie Walker. “I worked all summer on my shot, on scoring and I believe it was just a good start for me last year. I need to build up on that and be even better. I have confidence in myself and in my abilities. It’s going to be fun.”
Filip Chytil ready for another level
The Rangers rewarded Chytil with a four-year contract extension back on March 29 at an AAV of $4.4375 million. In hindsight, that deal could be one of the best-valued on the team if he continues his upward projection.
Chytil’s numbers last year were even more impressive when you realize he only averaged 14:14 of ice time. That ranked 9th among all forwards, behind fellow line mates Kaapo Kakko (15:18) and Alexis Lafreniere (15:13).
That hasn’t gone unnoticed by expert observers like NHL Network Analyst Mike Rupp. “Filip Chytil had a career year and I’m ready for him to be a superstar,” he recently said on the Forever Blueshirts Show.
Host Steven Pappas also recognized Chytil’s prowess in a article this past offseason.
Powerplay time or not, Chytil made his money at 5-on-5 a season ago. 19 of his 22 goals came at even strength..The transition game best suits his style of play and it has been evident through his career to this point. According to AllThreeZones, an online hockey newsletter, around 50% of goals are scored off the rush whether it’s by transition or off counter-attacks. Chytil is categorized as an “Entry/Exit Specialist” in a recent project they’ve done, calling Chytil an entry stud for years who has slowly started to produce more offense.
On Wednesday, new head coach Peter Laviolette had a clear message for his players. “The one message from me to the players is every day to come in and try to show your greatness,” he stated.
It appears that Chytil is ready to do so.
