Georgiev Clutch Late As Rangers Win In Shootout

Following Friday night’s 3-2 overtime loss in Detroit, the Rangers looked to get back in the win column at Nationwide Arena against the Columbus Blue Jackets. And thanks to goaltender Alexandar Georgiev, they were able to do just that.

Mika Zibanejad – The Blueshirts got on the board first in this one on a goal from the 25-year-old Swede. Zibanejad started the play in the defensive zone forcing a turnover. Pavel Buchnevich took the puck, made a nice move around the sliding Columbus defender, and hit Zibanejad at the back post for a tap-in and a 1-0 lead in the first. The goal was Zibanejad’s seventh of the season and his 15th point of the season in 17 games for the Rangers.

Pavel Buchnevich – Speaking of Buchnevich, the Russian forward netted a goal of his own in this one, taking the pass from Jimmy Vesey and one-timing it past Joonas Korpisalo to give the Blueshirts a 2-1 lead.

David Quinn is thrilled with Pavel Buchnevich's play in recent games, as the young winger picked up a goal & an assist in tonight's #NYR win.

Chris Kreider – The 27-year-old winger gave the Rangers a two-goal lead in the middle frame as he deposited a gorgeous pass from Kevin Hayes into the back of the net. The tally was Kreider’s eighth of the season which leads the Blueshirts.

Jimmy Vesey – After Columbus scored three unanswered goals to take a 4-3 lead, Jimmy Vesey tied the game for the Blueshirts just before the end of the second period. Hayes drove the net and spun the puck into the crease and Vesey was able to poke it past Korpisalo and quieting the Columbus crowd.

But Vesey was not done as the Harvard alumnus got the Rangers the two points in the shootout, beating the Columbus netminder on the glove side. The win gives the Rangers points in five of their last six games, and the team has earned 11 of a possible 12 points in that span.

Tony DeAngelo – The Sewell, NJ native had himself a nice night in Columbus. DeAngelo tallied the secondary assist on Chris Kreider’s goal, two hits, a blocked shot and he dropped the gloves with Riley Nash in the third period.

After a less than impressive season last year under Alain Vigneault, DeAngelo has really flourished under David Quinn so far this year. He seems to have taken the opportunity created by Adam McQuaid’s injury and is running with it. One can only hope this is a sign of big things to come for Tony.

Alexandar Georgiev – We are not talking about a Rangers win if it wasn’t for the performance of goaltender Alex Georgiev. Despite giving up four goals, arguably none of which were his fault, the young Bulgarian came up huge to ensure the Rangers got a point, and ultimately the second in the shootout. On a night where the Rangers weren’t at their best, their goaltender made sure the team had a chance to win.

Next Game: The Rangers head back to The Garden on Monday night when they will face the Vancouver Canucks. Puck drops at 7!
