The New York Rangers wanted to erase a terrible third period against the San Jose Sharks from Thursday night, but instead put up another stinker.

This time it was the Columbus Blue Jackets taking advantage of some poor goaltending by Jaroslav Halak and some shoddy defensive lapses. Before it was all said and done, the Rangers fell 5-1 against a team that was blown out the night before by the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-3.

“We’re still looking for the pretty play instead of getting pucks to the net with bodies,” Barclay Goodrow explained. “It just comes down to playing the way we’re capable of playing. We have a big test coming up (against the Colorado Avalanche). It’s up to the players to correct this and come in with a good mindset on Tuesday.”

1st Period

Things started off poorly for the Rangers just two minutes into the game as Filip Chytil took an elbow to the head from Cole Sillinger and was knocked out of the contest.

“He’s day-to-day and we’ll assess him tomorrow to see how he is,” coach Gerard Gallant updated on the MSG postgame. “I don’t think it was vicious play. I don’t think he meant to hurt him, but he still got him with a shoulder to the head. But I don’t think there was any intent at all.”

Columbus took a 1-0 lead at 17:54 of the first period on Werenski’s second goal of the season. Werenski intercepted a pass in the Blue Jackets defensive load and led the rush the other way. He knocked in the rebound on Foudy’s shot.

2nd Period

Peeke scored from the right circle at 1:42 of the second period on a pass from Roslovic. Voracek also earned an assist on Peeke’s first goal this season.

Chinakhov scored his first of the season on a shot from above the right circle nine minutes into the second period. Foudy and Jake Bean assisted.

Panarin scored his fourth goal of the season at 18:44 of the second while the Rangers had a two-man advantage. Gustav Nyquist’s errant pass went right to Panarin, who shot from the high slot.

New York had a 25-14 advantage in shots on goal after two periods.

“I’m just going to talk about myself,” said Halak, who allowed 5 goals on 21 shots. “I got outplayed by their goalie and I need to be better next game. Hopefully down the road I can help the guys. I wasn’t my best tonight.”

3rd Period

The wheels fell completely off the bus in the final period.

Robinson scored his first goal of the season on a deflection of Erik Gudbranson’s shot at 14:13 of the third period. Sean Kuraly also had an assist.

Johnson scored his second of the season 44 seconds later. Roslovic and Voracek had assists.

“I like our team being an aggressive forecheck team and I didn’t see much of that,” Gallant explained. “We can’t blame Halak and say we were good enough because we weren’t. I didn’t like the body language of our players– let’s just go play the game. We’re big boys.”

Notable Rangers

  • Jaroslav Halak stopped just 16 of 21 shots
  • Artemi Panarin extended his point streak to 6 games
