Kevin Hayes Hits the Open Market, Do the Rangers Have a Shot?

Kevin Hayes is now a free agent. (Chicago Blackhawks)

Boston College power forward, Kevin Hayes is free of the Chicago Blackhawks today. Where will this prized prospect sign next? New York? Boston? Florida? Or Calgary?

Yes, the Flames! Why? Because they signed both of his BC linemates, Johnny Gaudreau and Bill Arnold. Not only are they members of his line, he has called them his best friends!

The dominance of this “trio” was incredible. When used as a line at BC, they combined for an average of 4.77 points per game! They tore up the college circuit averaging 2.07 goals per game. With those numbers, I would adopt my linemates.

The simple fact is this, the Flames are a young team and if Hayes were to sign there, he and his line mates may be reunited come opening night. Is it any wonder why Calgary has emerged as a front runner.

Are the Rangers in it? Sure, they have made it a point to go after college hockey players like McDonagh, Stepan and Kreider. Speaking of Chris Kreider, he and Hayes were also teammates at BC. Unfortunately, not best buds.

Let’s not dismiss the Bruins as well. They have also been going for college players and Hayes would be playing close to home. Still, neither Boston or the Rangers guarantee him immediate playing time.

Lastly, there are the Panthers. In Florida, he would not only make the roster immediately, but he would not have to pay state income tax. As we’ve learned by losing both Anton Stralman and Brian Boyle to Tampa Bay, it’s becoming all the rage in the NHL.

So, we will wait and see as Kevin Hayes pulls his own “mini-Lebron”. Where will this prized prospect go? My money is on the Flames.
