Another 1994 Ranger, Kevin Lowe gets HHOF call after winning 6 Cups
Kevin Lowe got the call today from Lanny McDonald and the Hockey Hall of Fame that he will be inducted this coming November. The steady rearguard was the epitome of calm and cool under pressure. Never flashy, Lowe was the kind of defenseman that quietly ate minutes against the top offensive players and made goalies even more confident by simply being out there.
Kevin Lowe “deserving” honor
Kevin Lowe was a lynchpin of 5 Stanley Cup championships with the Edmonton Oilers. During the offensive hay days of the 80’s he was the defensive conscience of a team that would run you out of the building. Remember, Lowe played on a team that featured scoring dynamos Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Jari Kurri, and Paul Coffey. Still the defensive minded Lowe never topped more than 46 points.
Kevin Lowe was the veteran leader of the 1994 Rangers Defense
On December 11th, 1992 Neil Smith made a key move in building his 1994 Championship team. Kevin Lowe was acquired for prospect Roman Oksiuta and a 3rd round pick. The 33 year old defenseman was brought in to teach a young defense that featured Brian Leetch, Jeff Beukeboom, and Sergei Zubov how to win. He spent almost 4 seasons with the Rangers and played through injuries in the 1994 playoffs but only missed one game. That would be the 6th Stanley Cup ring Lowe would win and it may have been the sweetest.
Kevin Lowe, Hall of Famer
Kevin Lowe is now the 7th member of the famed Edmonton Oilers dynasty to enter the Hall. He joins Gretzky, Messier, Kurri, Coffey, Glenn Anderson, and Grant Fuhr. He is also the third member of the 1994 Rangers defense to get in with Brian Leetch and Sergei Zubov.
