Leevi Aaltonen victorious in debut for Finland U19s

Four weeks after being drafted, it’s back to business for Leevi Aaltonen. The season has started for the speedy winger, who was picked in the fifth round by the New York Rangers.

Aaltonen was added to the Finland U19 team for a friendly touranment in Vierumäki, Finland. Today was their first game, as they faced the Czech Republic U20 team. In a thrilling encounter, the Finns were victorious thanks to a late goal by undrafted defenseman Elias Laitamäki. Leevi Aaltonen assisted on Finland’s fourth goal; finishing the game with three shots on goal and a +1 rating in his debut for the U19 team. Last season, Aaltonen had 11 goals and 19 assists in 34 games for the U18 team.

Tomorrow, Aaltonen and the Finns take on Switzerland’s U20 squad, and on Thursday, the Finnish coaching staff will announce the team for the World Junior Summer Showcase, which starts on Saturday in Plymouth, Michigan. Aaltonen could be the sixth Rangers prospect to feature in the annual tournament this year, joining Swedes Nils Lundkvist, Karl Henriksson, Olof Lindbom, and Americans K’Andre Miller and Zac Jones.
