Lundqvist Carries But Rangers Fall Short In Shootout

The Rangers garner a point off the shoulders of Henrik Lundqvist but fall short in the shootout as the Devils defeat the Blueshirts 3-2 in an action-filled game on Thursday Night.

In a night where former Rangers players took the forefront, the scoring for the game started with former Rangers defenseman John Moore, who netted his fourth goal of the season to start the scoring at 7:22 in the first. Not too long after, at 9:55 in the first, Jimmy Vesey scores off a scramble in front to tie the game at one.

Soon after, Nick Holden storms up the ice and slams in the rebound from Chris Kreider’s shot to make it 2-1 Rangers at 11:59 of the first period.

Blake Coleman of the Devils scored the only goal of the second period, shorthanded at 16:24 of the second to tie the game at 2.

Then, with 1:48 into the third period, Kevin Hayes banks a shot off of Cory Schneider to give the Rangers a 3-2 lead.

Not to be outdone, Brian Boyle sticks it to his old mates and banks in a Power Play goal at 11:54 after a Chris Kreider elbowing penalty. Both teams would generate great chances in the 3v3 Overtime period but both Schneider and Lundqvist kept both teams off the board to take it to the shootout.

Palmieri for the Devils and Zibanejad for the Rangers both notched wrist shot goals past both goaltenders in the shootout before Brian Boyle wristed a quick shot five-hole versus Lundqvist.

Rangers defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk attempted to tie the game shootout on his attempt but was stopped by Schneider to seal the Devils 3-2 win.

Henrik Lundqvist stopped a season-high 45 Devils shots in this contest. In a less than stellar performance, Kevin Shattenkirk only saw 16:23 minutes of ice time, including limited time on ice during the 3rd period. Nick Holden’s goal was his first goal in his last 20 contests.
