Markstrom steals one from Rangers as Canucks win 2-1

After a tough loss in Calgary, the Rangers headed to Vancouver to take on the Canucks. A closely played game resulted in a tight contest throughout but Vancouver prevailed with a late goal in the third from Tyler Myers to win it 2-1. Here’s our recap.

Tight Game

Vancouver began the game with a jump, as they scored 1:46 into the first, as Anton Roussel netted in a rebound. Not too long after, at 7:59 of the first, Pavel Buchnevich scored his seventh of the season to tie it after a solid forecheck in the Canucks zone. This game was a defensive battle as both teams remained at one for the remainder of the first and all of the second period.

Markstrom the difference

After tempered but solid game all around, the third period was met with urgency and action. Both teams created solid shifts and strong scoring chances, but the game remained tied at one. Tyler Myers netted a late goal after Brady Skjei iced the puck to give Vancouver the 2-1 lead and that would stick the rest of the way. Alexandar Georgiev was solid in net making 25 saves on 27shots, but was outdueled by Jacob Markstom, who made 36 saves on 37 shots.

Post Game Notes

SHUTTING THE DOOR – The Blueshirts held the Canucks to 27 shots on goal in tonight’s game, including six shots on goal in the third period. The Rangers have allowed 30 shots on goal or fewer in a game in each of the last two contests and in seven of the last 12 contests.

KILL ZONE – The Blueshirts were 3-for-3 (6:00) on the penalty kill in tonight’s contest. New York has not allowed a power play goal against in 10 of the last 15 games (44-for-52; 84.6%), in 12 of the last 18 games (53-for-63; 84.1%), and in 14 of the last 21 games (64-for-75; 85.3%).

TWO GOOD – New York allowed two goals or fewer in a game for the 16th time this season.

CLOSE CALL – Each of the Rangers’ last two games, three of the Blueshirts’ last four games, and 10 of the team’s last 21 games have been decided by one goal.

Pavel Buchnevich tallied a goal and registered three shots on goal in 20:06 of ice time. He has recorded a point in each of the last two games (one goal, one assist), and he has tallied four points (two goals, two assists) in the last eight games.

Jacob Trouba led all skaters with five shots on goal, led the Rangers with four blocked shots, and was credited with two hits while skating in a game-high 24:34 of ice time. Trouba has led the Rangers in ice time in 22 of 41 games this season, and he has logged at least 20:00 of ice time in each of the last 24 games. In addition, Trouba has logged at least 24:00 of ice time in each of the last three games. He has also registered 12 shots on goal over the last two contests.
