New York Rangers goalie depth chart after Hugo Ollas signing

The New York Rangers added to their organizational goalie depth chart, signing Hugo Ollas to a two-year, entry-level contract Friday. The 21-year-old was a seventh-round pick (No. 197) in the 2020 NHL Draft by the Rangers.

It’s the third goalie signed by New York in the past couple weeks. The Rangers signed their No. 2 on Broadway, Jonathan Quick, to a one-year contract extension on March 3. A week later, they extended the contract of veteran Louis Domingue through the 2024-25 season.

A native of Sweden, Ollas recently finished his collegiate career at Merrimack College. He was 7-12-0 in 21 games this season, with a 2.84 goals-against average and .908 save percentage. Ollas ranked eighth among Hockey East goalies in save percentage and 12th in GAA.

The 6-foot-7 goalie was 27-27-0 with a 2.48 GAA, .914 save percentage and six shutouts in 60 career games with Merrimack.

Ollas will report to the Hartford Wolf Pack, the Rangers’ American Hockey League affiliate. He is the seventh goalie presently under contract with the Rangers.

7. Hugo Ollas

The newest goalie is low man on the totem pole. That’s the case even though he’ll be reporting to the AHL and two goalies listed ahead of him are playing in the ECHL.

Ollas will be third string in Hartford and might see only spot duty with the Wolf Pack fighting for a playoff spot.

6. Talyn Boyko

A fourth-round pick (No. 112) by the Rangers in the 2021 draft, Boyko is playing his first professional season with Cincinnati in the ECHL. The 21-year-old is 10-8-0 with a 3.77 GAA and .877 save percentage in 20 games.

Boyko is another tall goalie, standing 6-foot-7. The Alberta native played five seasons in the Western Hockey League during his junior career and won 29 games with Kelowna and Tri-City in 2021-22.

5. Olof Lindblom

Another goalie from Sweden, because why wouldn’t the Rangers corner the market on Swedish goalie prospects after their Henrik Lundqvist success?

Lindblom was a second-round pick (No. 39) in the 2018 NHL Draft. This is the 23-year-old’s second season in the ECHL, where he’s splitting time with Boyko in Cincinnati. He is 10-13-3 with a 3.57 GAA and .884 save percentage in 27 games.

A year ago, Lindblom won 17 games and had a 3.01 GAA with Jacksonville in the ECHL. He’s also winless in three appearances (two starts) in the AHL with Hartford the past two seasons.

4. Dylan Garand

A fourth-round pick (No. 103) in the same 2020 draft when the Rangers selected Ollas, Garand is playing extremely well in his second full pro season at Hartford. Garand is 16-9-5 with a 2.69 GAA, .910 save percentage and two shutouts this season. Among goalies who’ve played at least 30 games, Garand is seventh in save percentage and eighth in goals-against average.

The 21-year-old appears to have the makings of a potential NHL goalie and is thriving, perfecting his craft, at the highest level of the minors. With Quick signed through next season, Garand could be in line for backup duty by 2025-26.

3. Louis Domingue

Domingue is a 32-year-old veteran with 143 games of NHL experience. He’s the top option in the minor leagues to be recalled should anything happen to the two goalies there. Which is exactly what happened earlier in the season, when Domingue stepped in with Igor Shesterkin sidelined and stopped 25 of 26 shots in a 4-1 win against the Minnesota Wild.

With the Pittsburgh Penguins back in the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs, Domingue filled in for the injured Tristan Jarry and Casey DeSmith in the first round against the Rangers and was 3-3 with a 3.65 GAA in six games, including a 4-3 win in triple overtime in Game 1.

This season, Domingue is 13-7-4 with a 2.65 GAA, .910 save percentage and one shutout in 24 games with Hartford.

2. Jonathan Quick

The three-time Stanley Cup champion is likely headed to the Hockey Hall of Fame when he hangs up his skates. Quick has 389 wins, tied with Dominik Hasek for 16th all-time in NHL history. He’s also two wins behind Ryan Miller for most by a United States-born goalie in the NHL.

Quick’s been a blessing for the Rangers this season, starting 9-0-1 and currently sitting at 14-5-2 with a 2.38 GAA, .917 save percentage and two shutouts. It has been a terrific rebound season for the 38-year-old after a recent downturn in his career.

1. Igor Shesterkin

Shesterkin is the unquestioned No. 1 with the Rangers, even though he struggled earlier this season. He’s a Vezina Trophy winner with 127 wins and a splendid .921 save percentage in just 202 career NHL games.

The two-time All-Star is in his prime, though due a new contract after next season. This season, he’s sixth in the League with 28 wins and set to reach 30+ for the third straight season. He also has a 2.60 GAA and .912 save percentage after a terrific run the past six weeks.
