The New York Rangers are just a little over a month away from training camp which is expected to open around 9/21 or 9/23. This upcoming season, the Blueshirts prospects will not partake in the Traverse City Tournament.

Another important and still undecided factor is the recently released 2021-22 regular season schedule has not finalized. The NHL included a two-week pause from Feb. 7-22 to allow its players to participate in the Olympics. While the break is scheduled, the league, the NHL Players’ Association and the International Ice Hockey Federation still must reach an agreement on issues regarding player participation, which include COVID-19 insurance.

Per the news release, the NHL and the union “will retain full authority to decide not to participate should COVID-19 conditions worsen or otherwise pose a threat to the health and safety of NHL Players, or for any other reason that may warrant such decision.”

Expect the schedule to be updated and that two pause removed if NHLPA opt out of participation.

Let’s quickly take a look at some very important dates as we head towards the 2021-22 Season:

  • Mid to Late September: Start of Training Camp
  • 9/26: 2021 preseason begins against NY Islanders 7 PM
  • 10/9: Last preseason game at NY Islanders 7 PM
  • 10/13: 2021-22 Season begins at Washington Capitals 7:30 PM
  • 10/14: Rangers home opener against Dallas Stars 7:00 PM

We can expect players starting to make their way to New York in preparation for the start of camp in about 4 weeks.

This will be a shorter camp than usual as the NHL works to get back to a pre-COVID timeframe. If you didn’t notice, this was a ridiculously brief offseason.

Anticipation is high for fans with the Rangers starting the season against Tom Wilson and Capitals. Newly acquired Ryan Reaves will ingratiate himself quickly with the Blueshirt Faithful as he’s sure to go after Wilson all game.
