New York Rangers lineup against the Red Wings
Georgiev, 26, gets the start in net tonight as it’s the second game of a back-to-back set. The goaltender has never faced the Detroit Red Wings in his career.
This season, the 26 year-old netminder has a record of 10-9-2-1 with a 3.08 GAA and a .894 SV%. In his last game, Georgiev struggled against the Buffalo Sabres allowing 4 goals on 17 shots. The Rangers did win that contest 5-4 in overtime this past Sunday.
The Rangers held a morning skate on Tuesday without Ryan Strome as he’s listed as day-to-day with a lower-body injury that also occurred in the Sabres game.
Towards the end of the first period it looked like he was having an issue skating.
“The trainer tells me day-to-day, so he’s possible for tomorrow but I don’t know,” Gerard Gallant said yesterday.
Strome, 28, has 45 points (15G -30A) through 62 games this season for the Blueshirts. He will be an unrestricted free agent this summer and there has been very little progress made on an extension at this point.
Andrew Copp has played in his spot centering Artemi Panarin and Dryden Hunt. Since slotting in the middle he has registered three assists through five periods with a +3 rating. He’s totaled 6 points in 4 games since being acquired at the NHL Trade Deadline on March 21.
Rangers looking for a big win against Red Wings
The New York Rangers are up to second place in the Metropolitan Division thanks to their latest hot streak. They will try to keep that trend going when they head to Detroit to face the struggling Red Wings on Wednesday.
It’s a potential trap game and they need to bring their best, like they did against the Penguins.
Chris Kreider scored a power-play goal early in the third period to give the Rangers a 3-1 lead on Tuesday. Penguins star Sidney Crosby scored on a power play midway through the third, but the Rangers subsequently withstood Pittsburgh’s efforts to get the tying goal.
“You look at the standings and know you are one point behind them with a game in hand. You know it’s a big game coming in here,” Rangers coach Gerard Gallant said postgame. “Just because we beat them in our building pretty good three or four days ago, we knew we were going to be challenged tonight — and we played a real good hockey game.”
New York goaltender Igor Shesterkin made 22 saves on Tuesday and got plenty of assistance from the back line.
“I thought tonight was the best we moved the puck out of the defensive zone all year,” Gallant said. “Our defense made quick plays up the ice.”
After hovering around the .500 mark in terms of points acquired for a good portion of the season, the Red Wings have nosedived this month. Since an overtime victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on March 1, Detroit has gone 2-8-2.
The latest loss was the Red Wings’ ugliest of the season. Detroit gave up nine goals in the last two periods of an 11-2 clunker at Pittsburgh on Sunday.
“It’s not acceptable,” Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin said. “We really can’t play like that or show up like that the rest of the season here. It’s going to get worse, and we’ll get embarrassed every night.
