New York Rangers look to complete perfect trip, face Winnipeg Jets

On Monday night, the New York Rangers will face off against the Winnipeg Jets, in the hopes of capping off a perfect five-game road trip across western Canada. The Blueshirts emerged victorious in overtime on Saturday night against the Vancouver Canucks, thanks to a game-winning goal from defenseman K’Andre Miller that sealed the 4-3 victory.

“It wasn’t our best effort,” Miller said after the win. “I think we can take some things we did good away from the game and come back and finish the road trip off the right way.”

Per the Rangers PR, if the club wins tonight, it will be the first time in franchise history that they have won all five games in regulation on a long road trip. Three times in their history—2014–15, 1991–92, and 1972–73—the Rangers have gone on a road trip playing at least five games without suffering a regulation loss. In addition, a victory would give the Blueshirts their most wins in the month of October since the 2014-2015 campaign.

New York Rangers vs Winnipeg Jets

After suffering two 4-1 losses against the Jets last season, the Rangers will be out for revenge. Their last victory over Winnipeg came in April 2022, setting the stage for what should be a fiercely contested game.

With three victories in their previous four games, Winnipeg has a solid 4-3-1 record going into the contest. They will however, be hoping to recover from Saturday night’s shootout loss to the Montreal Canadiens. The Jets are currently second in the Central Division, with their team being headlined by the likes of Kyle Connor, Mark Scheifele, Josh Morrissey, and star goaltender Connor Hellebuyck.

The Rangers’ objective going into this game should be to finish strong and hold on to the momentum they’ve gained throughout their road trip. The Rangers showed their tenacity and ability to come through in the clutch with a victory over the Canucks on Saturday, even though they didn’t play their best overall game. This kind of perseverance will be essential against a tough Jets team.

It’s noteworthy that New York has won six of their first eight games despite important players, Mika Zibanejad and Filip Chytil, scoring just one goal combined. The Rangers’ offense would gain depth and become even more dangerous if these two could find their scoring rhythm.

Blake Wheeler will also be playing in his first game back in Winnipeg following his buyout by the Jets. Having played for the Thrashers/Jets organization for 13 seasons, six of which he captained, Wheeler was a mainstay of the team. His homecoming will undoubtedly be emotional, and it will be intriguing to watch how he plays in comparison to his old club.

The expected goalie matchup is about as good as you can get, with Igor Shesterkin (4-2-0, 2.70 GAA, .900 SV%) going up against Hellebuyck (4-2-0, 2.99 GAA, .899 SV%). Puck drop is scheduled for 7:37 p.m. ET.
