New York Rangers to interview Spencer Carbery
The Blueshirts relieved Gerard Gallant of his head coaching duties on May 6 after being eliminated by the New Jersey Devils in the opening round of the playoffs.
Gallant, 59, lasted in just two years of his four-year contract. Over that time, he amassed a record of 99-46-19 with a .662 points percentage. However, his 13-14 postseason record coupled with back-back-back series losses after taking a 2-0 lead factored into the equation.
President and General Manager Chris Drury also cited comments made by players in exit interviews as part of his decision.
Many names have been mentioned regarding who the Rangers may be interested in to replace Gallant. Some have already been eliminated from contention like Joel Quenneville, Darryl Sutter, and Mike Babcock.
Who is Spencer Carbery?
Carbery is a surprise addition to the mix which includes veteran bench boss Peter Laviolette.
Before joining Keefe’s staff in 2021, Carbery was a head coach with the OHL’s Saginaw Spirit, ECHL’s South Carolina Stingrays, and AHL’s Hershey Bears.
While leading the Capitals AHL affiliate from 2018-19 to 2020-21, he amassed a record of 104-50-0-17.
Carbery is considered a future NHL head coach with a real love for the game. Prior to the San Jose Sharks hiring David Quinn, he was considered a strong candidate for the job.
Another reason that the Rangers may be looking at Carbery as a candidate is his ability to connect and work with young players. The Rangers need Alexis Lafreniere and Kaapo Kakko to reach that next level, especially with their limited salary cap space.
