The New York Rangers 2022-23 season has been riddled with injuries and inconsistencies. As they look to get center Filip Chytil back, defenseman Ryan Lindgren is considered doubtful for the matchup against the Detroit Red Wings at the Garden today.

“A lot more (injuries) than usual. A lot more than last year that I can remember, but nothing major,” Gerard Gallant bemoaned as he knocked on the wooden podium.

While Gallant hasn’t committed to today’s lineup, Chytil indicated that he’s good to go.

“I’m ready to play,” Chytil said. “I feel 100 percent and I can’t wait for tomorrow. How I started, I was happy about it. I had a little pause but I can’t wait to get back to where I left off.”

After losing four games in a row, the team rattled off three straight wins before getting bowled over the Boston Bruins on Thursday. Regardless of the lineup, their goal is to get back on the winning track.

New York Rangers take on Red Wings

The Rangers have been running at .500 for the last 8 games (3-3-2) after opening up the season winning three out of four (3-1-0).

New York would love to get a string of wins together and stay near the top of the Metropolitan Division. Their 14 points places them in a three-way tie for third with the Philadelphia Flyers and the New York Islanders before the start of play today.

With the return of Chytil, Gallant is happy to have his top three lines back to normal.

“Fil’s a big part of our group,” Gallant said on Saturday. “And you know, we really miss him when he’s out. So obviously it makes a big difference in your top nine, for sure.”

During ESPN’s broadcast of the Rangers 5-2 loss to the Boston, Emily Kaplan confirmed that Chytil suffered a concussion.

As a result, Chytil will be wearing a tinted visor which other players have done after dealing with concussion symptoms. Light sensitivity is one of the more common issues and the tint reduces the effects of that.

“It helps me and that’s what I need,” Chytil noted. “The ice and the lights, it helps my body and that’s why I use it.”

Chytil, 23, has 3 points in 6 games this season.

The Rangers will likely be without Ryan Lindgren after he was injured on a questionable hit by David Pastrnak of the Bruins on Thursday. An interference call was made but Lindgren left the game midway through the first period and is labeled day-to-day with an upper-body injury.

“If Lindgren doesn’t play [Sunday], obviously Libor (Hajek) is there,” Gallant noted. “[Gord Murphy] will decide on the pairs later.”

Gallant would not confirm who will be starting on Sunday, but it is very possible Jaroslav Halak will get the nod.

The head coach will address the media today at 3:00 PM ET.

Red Wings have been good this season

The Detroit Red Wings are off to an excellent start after going 32-40-10 for a 6th place finish in the Atlantic Division last season. They currently sit in third just 1 point behind the Tampa Bay Lightning.

They also come into Madison Square Garden on a two-game winning streak defeating the Washington Capitals and New York Islanders.

Some good news for the Rangers is that the Wings are playing their second game of a back-to-back set. On Saturday, Ville Husso shutout the Islanders 3-0 at home. They travel to New York for today’s tilt looking to snap a three-game road losing streak.

The Blueshirts have been good against the Wings going 5-0-1 in their past six encounters. Last season, the Rangers recorded a 5-4 overtime win in Detroit on March 30 and rolled to a 4-0 win on April 16 in New York after losing in the shootout in Detroit on February 17.
