NHL Trade Bait: Will Patrick Kane be dealt? Jakob Chychrun on the move?
The NHL Trade Bait Tracker has been updated with our previous #4 candidate Vladimir Tarasenko now off the board to the New York Rangers. The March 3 Trade Deadline is just a little over two weeks away and more moves are expected in advance of that date.
Jakob Chychrun is now back on top of the list as he was scratched on Saturday night “due to trade related reasons” per the Arizona Coyotes. According to multiple reports, no trade is imminent but many have the Los Angeles Kings as the top landing spot. The team will keep Chychrun out of the lineup until a deal is done or the deadline passes.
Timo Meier drops down from the fist spot but remains as one of the top five players likely to be moved. Patrick Kane, James van Riesmdyk, and Vladislav Gavrikov are also expected to be wearing new uniforms soon.
Vitali Kravtsov of the Rangers climbs the list after requesting a trade over the weekend.

A look at the top trade candidates
Jakob Chychrun: It feels like forever that the Arizona Coyotes have been trying to trade Chychrun. With 3 years remaining on his contract (this season plus two more) and an excellent AAV of at $4.6 million he’s a great cost-controlled top 4 d-man. Jeff Marek noted that the Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs were not in the mix, leaving speculation the Kings are the team that may land him. Through 36 games, he’s notched 28 points.
Patrick Kane: When the Rangers traded for Vladimir Tarasenko, Kane was not shy to tell reporters he was disappointed because they were a team he was considering. However, he’s still yet to agree to waive his full no-move clause. One piece of good news is that Kane claims reports of his injury are overblown. This season, he has 35 points in 48 games. Kane will be a UFA this summer and has a full no-move clause to control where he lands. The Blackhawks will also need to retain 50% of his $10.5M cap hit for potential suitors that may now include the Carolina Hurricanes, Colorado Avalanche, and Boston Bruins. There’s even some speculation that the Rangers could still be a destination if a third party were to get involved.
James van Riemsdyk: The Flyers are rebuilding and pending UFA James van Riemsdyk is a valuable asset to help them do that. At 33 years-old he still has something left in the tank with 22 points in 35 games this season. Keep your eyes on the Vegas Golden Knights, who lost Mark Stone and need a winger for Jack Eichel.
Timo Meier: The 26 year-old is having a great campaign with 30 goals and 51 points in 54 games. The New Jersey Devils are linked as the strongest suitor to acquire him but the Buffalo Sabres could also be a contender for his services. According to Pierre LeBrun, the extension for Timo Meier is expected to be at least $9 million per season. All that being said, he’s a pending RFA and the Sharks may hold on to him for one more season. The salary cap is going up $4 million in 2024 and opens the door for more teams to get involved.
Vladislav Gavrikov: This 27 year-old defenseman is garnering a lot of attention with the Edmonton Oilers rumored to be the most likely landing spot. This year, he has 10 points in 52 games and could solidify a contenders top 4.
