Nils Lundkvist is coming to New York… but only for the summer
New York Rangers prospect Nils Lundkvist was interviewed recently by Swedish newspaper Norbotten Kuriren. The focus was on next season and Lundkvist told the newspaper he is planning on flying to New York. “But I am coming back.”
As expected, he will attend Rangers prospect camp but Lundkvist has no intention of leaving Sweden behind just yet. Lundkvist is expected to fly to New York by the end of next week and will be with the club for the entire month of July.
Lundkvist is looking forward to meeting all the new prospects who will be added to the organization this summer. “There are about ten other players who will be there this summer and this feels like a good opportunity to get to know them and everyone else in the New York Rangers better.”
The remarks from Lundkvist are in line with the overall expectations with Luleå participating in both the SHL and CHL this upcoming season, the young defensive prospect has a busy season ahead of him. Playing against the Belfast Giants, Augsburger Panther and Bílí Tygři Liberec in the CHL, a lock for the u20 team in the Four Nations and the 2020 World Juniors in the Czech Republic, he will be traveling all over Europe.
Luleå’s coaching staff has also indicated they want to pair Nils Lundkvist with captain Erik Gustafsson (b. 1988), not to be confused with the other Erik Gustafsson (b. 1992) who plays for the Chicago Blackhawks. This past season, Gustafsson played mostly with Jesper Sellgren on the top pair, but Sellgren signed his entry level contract with the Carolina Hurricanes 3 weeks ago and is expected to play for the Charlotte Checkers in the AHL this upcoming season.
The 18-year old Nils Lundkvist is expected to take his place and move up to the top pair and is excited about the opportunity: “It would be fun, of course. He is the best defenseman in the league. And I think Jesper learned a lot by playing with him.”
