POLL: IF THE NYR WIN TONIGHT, WHO ACCEPTS THE TROPHY?
In 1994 the answer was clear, as Mark Messier lifted the Prince of Wales trophy to the Garden crowd. However, this Rangers team has elected to not name a captain since trading away Ryan Callahan for Marty St. Louis on March 5th. Instead, they have elected to go with 3 Assistants in Brad Richards, Dan Girardi and Marc Staal.
We want to know who you think (not who you want) the Rangers will instruct to go get the trophy (if they win…because we won’t be part of a jinx)!
#1 Brad Richards
He keeps being referred to as the defacto captain by the media and he has been the most vocal leader on and off the ice. Does this former Conn Smythe Trophy winner get the call? He has 5G – 6A for 11 PTS.
#2 Dan Girardi
He has been re-signed to a long term deal. Girardi has been a staple on the top defensive unit for years and plays with guts and heart. Girardi has 1G and 6A in the post season.
#3 Marty St. Louis
Yes, he is the newest face in the room and yet everyone has gravitated to him. He is tied with Derek Stepan as the Rangers best offensive player in these playoffs with 6G – 7A for 13 PTS. MSL has become a lightning rod for inspiration and clutch scoring, should he accept it?
#4 Marc Staal
He also wears an A and was considered to be the Rangers future top defensemen. While he sits in the top 3, his shut down ability is on par with anyone. He has 1G – 4A and is a +3 this post season.
#5 Ryan McDonagh
The fans choice for future captain and why not! He has been incredible in these playoffs and has been likened to Brian Leetch. The former Rangers great even likened Mac to Scott Niedermayer. Lofty praise and well deserved as he leads all defenseman on the NYR with 3G – 9A for 12 PTS.
The King, “Mr. Game 7″, Hank! Henrik Lundqvist is the foundation for which this Rangers team and playoff run has been built on. He has come up big in every series and his numbers are elite. 11 WIN, 7 LOSSES, 2.15 GAA and a .926 SAVE %. Impressive enough for The King to raise A Prince?
P.S. If you believe in jinxes do not answer. Realize, no matter what you do or say, YOU HAVE NO BEARING ON THE OUTCOME. However, if you really think so, say hello to the Tooth Fairy for me. She owes me for the last tooth I lost when I was 8!
