Rangers Roundup: Behind the scenes of Patrick Kane trade, MSG+, and more
The New York Rangers have some time off and hope to get in sync before playing the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday.
It was a wild week filled with injuries, a suspension, cap contortions, playing shorthanded, and the trade for Patrick Kane. Unfortunately, in his two games with the Blueshirts the team is not only winless but looks disjointed.
Gerard Gallant will look to get some cohesion with his team over the next few days and they should be allotted this time before anyone hits a panic button.
Patrick Kane trade
On February 28, the Rangers acquired Kane and Cooper Zech from Chicago in exchange for Andy Welinski, a conditional 2023 second-round pick and a 2025 fourth-round pick. The Arizona Coyotes were also involved in the deal, acquiring a 2025 conditional third-round pick from New York.
A three-time Stanley Cup champion, Kane recorded 1,225 points (446 goals, 779 assists) in 1,161 career games with the Blackhawks but is still waiting to get his first point with his new team.
TSN posted a video via the Hawks of GM Kyle Davidson calling Kane to inform him he’s headed to the New York Rangers. It’s a cool behind-the-scenes look at what was a difficult moment for both the franchise and Kane.
MSG+
Madison Square Garden Entertainment announced last week the launch of MSG+.
MSG+ is being developed as a state-of-the-art streaming platform to provide fans in the region with the ability to access MSG Networks’ exclusive coverage of their favorite teams wherever they are and on their favorite devices ranging from mobile and tablet to connected TVs and other large screen applications. Fans who do not subscribe to a traditional, bundled pay television service may subscribe to MSG+ on a direct-to-consumer basis by purchasing monthly ($29.99) and annual ($309.99) subscriptions, which will include MSG Network and MSG SportsNet and all MSG-produced Knicks, Rangers, Islanders, Devils, and Sabres games as well as other live sports, events and programming included on the networks in their area. Additionally, fans will be able to purchase single games of their favorite local teams ($9.99 per game), an innovative offering not made available by any other regional sports network. MSG+ will be available at no additional charge to subscribers of participating pay television service providers of MSG Networks, replacing MSG GO as the company’s authenticated streaming service.
So fans who have an existing cable subscription that carries MSG will use this new streaming service as a replacement for MSG GO.
