Rangers Dine On Ducks After Shootout Win

With the Rangers coming off of a shootout victory on Tuesday night in San Jose, the Blueshirts headed to Anaheim looking to end their road trip with a second consecutive win. Although it took longer than David Quinn, and most fans, would’ve liked, the Blueshirts will be heading home happy.

Kevin Hayes – It seems as if Kevin Hayes may finally be starting to get it. Hayes had four shots on net, and seven attempts overall, and won 80% of his faceoffs. Oh, and he scored the opening goal of the game for the Blueshirts. With the Rangers on the man-advantage, Filip Chytil fired a pass that deflected slightly off of Brett Howden and Hayes one-timed the puck into the net.

Hayes has seemed to have been rejuvenated by the coaching change, and hopefully, he will continue to grow under David Quinn and his staff.

Brett Howden – The Rangers rookie has been impressive, to say the least, so far this season. Aside from assisting on the first Rangers goal, Howden got a tally of his own to give the Blueshirts a 2-1 lead heading into the third. Marc Staal’s shot-pass was perfectly placed into Howden’s path by Jimmy Vesey, and the youngster had an easy goal for his third of the year.

In addition to Howden getting on the scoresheet, and perhaps more impressively, the 20-year-old was a perfect 5/5 on faceoffs against Ryan Getzlaf and Ryan Kesler, two of the best in the league on faceoffs. The way Howden has been playing to start his career, he could be a great player in this league.

Tony DeAngelo – For as much as some Rangers fans would prefer to see DeAngelo get in the lineup regularly, he made a couple of noticeable mistakes that cost the Blueshirts the two points in regulation. Anaheim’s first goal came after DeAngelo took an unnecessary penalty when he interfered with a Ducks player behind the Rangers net. Anaheim would score on the ensuing power play. And on the tying goal for the Ducks, DeAngelo turned the puck over in the Rangers zone before Ryan Getzlaf found Rickard Rakell for a one-timer with 25 seconds left. Does DeAngelo have more of a future with the Rangers than someone like Adam McQuaid? Probably. But if he doesn’t play a smart all-around game, he’ll be spending more time in the press box than on the ice.

Alexandar Georgiev – The understudy to Henrik Lundqvist had himself a very good game against the Ducks, stopping 28 of 30 shots in regulation and overtime before stopping both Ducks shots in the shootout. Georgiev had a rough start to the season in Carolina but has bounced back nicely in his last two starts.

Next Game: The Rangers return to MSG on Sunday night when they host Jack Eichel, Rasmus Dahlin, and the Buffalo Sabres. Puck drops at 7!
