Rangers dominate league leading Montreal (NYR 5 v. MTL 0)
Back to back dominate performances from start to finish. Consecutive shutouts by BOTH goaltenders. Contributions from up and down the lineup – even Tanner Glass. Pinch me, it’s too good to be true.
RANGERS 5 v. CANADIENS 0
This was total domination from the moment the Rangers skated onto the ice. NY outshot, out-chanced and outclassed the Habs from start to finish.
“You know (Montreal) is a fast team and we have to be sharp,” Marty St. Louis said. The diminutive forward took it to Montreal with a goal an assist himself. MSL wanted to see how the Rangers stacked up against the league leading Canadiens, the answer was resounding.
Montreal’s coach, Michel Therrien was impressed with the Rangers too. “They played very well,” he said afterwards. “They had a lot of energy compared to us.”
Dominic Moore got the Rangers on the board first, thanks to Tanner Glass’ hard work and also Jesper Fast’s 1st NHL regular season point. MSL took over in the 2nd period, first setting up Stepan for his 2nd of the season – then breaking away from Montreal’s defense and roofing one over an outmatched Dustin Tokarski.
In the third period, NY put on the finishing touches early after a pretty tic-tac-toe tally. Hayes played it off the wall to Duclair who found a checked Hagelin in front. Hags out powered his man and slammed it home. Rick Nash would close out the scoring with his 14th goal of the year.
Alain Vigneault was all smiles after the game acknowledging that if the Rangers prepared and applied themselves, they are as good as any team in the league. “We certainly proved that tonight,” he said. Now they get another chance to prove themselves against a very good team, the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday.
The game will be slightly overshadowed by the return of Marty St. Louis to Tampa, but will be a shot at redemption just one week after being embarrassed at home.
