Rangers Edge Leafs In Thrilling OT Victory
Fresh off a loss, the Rangers came into the Scotiabank Arena wanting a win and they did just that.
Alexandar Georgiev did his best vintage Henrik Lundqvist impression and held the Leafs to one goal on 45 shots. Pavel Buchnevich opened the scoring in the third period for the Rangers, putting a loose puck in the back of the net after charging the Toronto goal. After a flurry of Maple Leafs attacks, Georgiev stood tall and eased the game into overtime for the Rangers. Ryan Strome would finish off a chance to the right of Frederik Andersen to seal the victory for New York.
Before the game, the Rangers announced that Chris Kreider, Freddy Claesson, and Connor Brickley would sit out, as well as Brendan Lemieux being placed on the top line with Mika Zibanejad and Pavel Buchnevich. Along with Georgiev being strong, the Rangers showed strong resolve in their defensive game and made numerous strong plays to keep the Leafs at bay. A fast paced evening, the Rangers’ energy was high as they kept up with the sleek skating Maple Leafs. Lemieux, who was previously mentioned as being slotted on the first line, looked comfortable playing on the wing with Buchnevich and Zibanejad, contributing to many chances on net and being gritty in front when needed.
Scoring his 18th goal of the season, Pavel Buchnevich looks like he’s beginning to reach a level that many Rangers fans were expecting him to reach, as he was noticeable all night on the puck and off, along with making smart and simple plays.
Ryan Strome, who scored the OT winner after a nice feed from Boo Nieves behind the net, has played exceptionally well over his last five games, that includes three points and seven shots on goal.
