Rangers likely destination for prized defenseman Adam Fox

Kevin Hayes and Jimmy Vesey were two college players that didn’t sign with their draft teams and ended up on Broadway. The Rangers may be adding another potential college free agent to the team this summer, Adam Fox.

Now that Adam Fox has let Carolina know where he stands, they need to decide on how to move him. A trade before the season ends allows the team to sign him and not lose a year on his ELC, but do the Rangers want to pay a price for a player they can likely sign next summer without losing a single asset.

Canes’ owner, Tom Dundon has said he will try and move Fox but what will the asking price be? Especially for a player that says he’s committed to Harvard for next season. Some suspect the asking price will start with a 1st round pick, but a 2nd rounder is more likely. For the Rangers, if their 2nd round pick can acquire a right handed defenseman that is considered a sure NHL player, they should jump at it.

Is NY a sure thing?

The Long Island native grew up a Rangers fan, but is his desire to play for NY a foregone conclusion? Not so fast.

“I know people think I have some plan to sign with the Rangers because of where I grew up,” Fox told The Athletic. “But my dream, my goal, is to play in the NHL. As soon as possible.”

Fox stating his goal is to just make the NHL is exactly what a player is supposed to say. Of course, if a player could pick his team, there’s no doubt that the Rangers would be his choice for more than just the obvious reason. New York is in a rebuild, and the blue-line needs work. Fox would have a great shot to make the team upon inking a deal and that should factor heavily into his decision to sign with any NHL team.

As far as the dream of playing for your childhood team, in the last few years Kevin Shattenkirk and John Tavares both went that route when free agency presented itself. For Adam Fox, this would be that chance and he can go from the stands, where he attended a game this season, to the ice in no time.
