Andersson went viral during last year’s tournament when he tossed his silver medal over the glass. Though he said afterward that he didn’t regret it, and most Rangers fans said it showed his competitive fire, the IIHF took a slightly different view on the proceedings.
Rangers fans shouldn’t be too worried about this. If Andersson makes the Rangers opening night roster for the 2018-19 season, and sticks around with the big club, his chances of representing Sweden on the World’s stage becomes highly unlikely. And if Andersson doesn’t stick around with the Rangers, the organization can simply keep him in North America and the suspension becomes moot.
Spoke to Andersson about the medal toss:
“No, I don’t regret it. That’s the type of person I am and I did it. I don’t regret it. I have won exactly the same medal at home in Sweden, and I lost three finals and one bronze-medal game in the last four years with the national team."— Rick Carpiniello (@RickCarpiniello) May 2, 2018
