Rangers Roundup: Hagelin’s contract, Duclair in Quebec and Boyle returns to SJ
We all know the Rangers are hot and they will look to continue their winning ways tonight in San Jose. Since, they beat L.A. on Thursday some news and notes have emerged so let’s address them.
Carl Hagelin Contract Status
As reported yesterday by SNYRangers, Carl Hagelin doesn’t believe the Rangers will talk contract until after this season. Hags is a restricted free agent, which means that the Rangers hold the advantage unless another team makes him an offer sheet.
That scenario is unlikely to happen as the compensation of 1st round picks would be too high. Carl Hagelin said “this is the only place I want to be” and that he believes there is a 99% chance he will stay.
Hags makes an AAV cap hit of 2.25M and will be looking for a nice pay raise. It is very likely that he could sign a similar contract like Mats Zuccarello for one year at a lower cap hit in order to buy each side more time to make a deal or head to unrestricted free agency.
Anthony Duclair Happy
The Duke is back in Quebec playing for the Remparts and is happy with his current situation. As per La Presse, Duclair said, “I knew there was a possibility that I could return to Quebec after the World Championship. I do not see it as a disappointment. I’m just 19 years old. It’s up to me to prove that I belong in the NHL.
Alain Vigneault reasoned the decision to return Duclair because the team is healthy. The coach also added that J.T. Miller’s play was a big factor and that it would’ve been tougher for Duclair to crack the lineup.
This is exactly the scenario we wrote about on December 9th here.
Dan Boyle Would Like a Win in SJ
Yes, call it the Captain Obvious report if you like. Dan Boyle who spent 6 seasons as a member of the Sharks would like a win against his former team. Although he wanted to stay with the Sharks, he understood why they chose to go in a different direction and holds no hard feelings.
