Rangers Roundup: Prospects battle in OHL playoffs, plus Copp and Vatrano on Goodrow

Today’s latest New York Rangers Roundup begins with two of the top prospects in the organization battling in the OHL playoffs.
It was a good night for Brennan Othmann (1G – 2A) and Will Cuylle (1G – 1A) as both had multi-point games. The Flint Firebirds are just one more win away from claiming the Wayne Gretzky Trophy as Western Conference Champs.
Othmann’s shorthanded goal got Flint on the board and cut the lead to 2-1. He then set up the next two goals to get his Firebirds a lead. Cuylle registered a PP goal to bring his Windsor Spitfires to within one but Flint held on for the win and 3-2 series lead.
Othmann and Cuylle battle it out in OHL
The Rangers drafted Cuylle in the 2020 draft, in the second round. The pick was acquired from the L.A. Kings in exchange for Lias Andersson. The 6-4, 210 lbs, 20 year-old winger had an impressive season with 43 goals and 80 points in 50 games. In the playoffs, he has added 10 goals and 10 assists in 16 contests.
Othmann, 19 was picked by the Rangers in the first round of the 2021 Draft. The 6-0, 180 lbs forward posted 50 goals and 97 points in the OHL this past season. In postseason play, he’s added 9 goals and 23 points in 17 games.
Copp and Vatrano on Goodrow

When Barclay Goodrow suited up for the New York Rangers in Game 6 on Saturday night, he didn’t just surprise fans and media but also his own teammates.
“[Copp] and I were driving to the rink together and Goody was there before us,” Vatrano recalled. “I was like, ‘Goody’s here, I think he might be playing,’ and Copp’s like, ‘What are you doing here?’ and he’s playing. It doesn’t surprise me at all. A guy who’s won Cups and knows what it takes to win. To see him come back from an injury like that so quick. What he brings to our team is not something you can replace and to have him in our lineup gave us that extra jump for sure.”
Goodrow, 29, played 13:16 from a believed ankle injury. He finished Game 6 winning 50% of his draws (7-7) and a +1 rating. Goodrow also added a block, hit, and a shot while playing a big role on the PK.
“Obviously, what he’s done for the last couple of years with the Stanley Cups– he’s a leader and a character guy on our team,” Gerard Gallant said. “What he does with his overall play– kills penalties and the whole works. He’s huge for our club.”
