Rangers Roundup: Staal stays, “Bad Day”, Holden on hold, and more

Staal Stays
As per the CBA, the 2nd buyout window triggers if a player files for arbitration. That begins 3 days from that date and lasts 48 hours. Since there isn’t some official clock to follow it appears that Marc Staal is not being bought out. The window opened on Friday and should be closed today.
Whatever discussions the team might have been having were probably quickly killed with the prospect of 8 years of dead cap space. That was also highlighted with monster hits of 4.7M, 5.7M, and 6.7M over the next seasons when you add in Girardi’s hit.
Sean has a bad Day
The WJSS opened up yesterday and Sweden’s Lias Andersson got the better of Day’s USA in game 1. With just 9 ticks on the clock, Sweden scored to break the 3-3 tie and take the game off an awful turnover by Sean Day.

Holden on Hold
The Rangers are overstocked on the blue line and are actively shopping Nick Holden. By choosing not to buyout Marc Staal, a trade involving Holden for Toronto’s Tyler Bozak now seems unlikely due to limited cap space.
This likely will put the Rangers in a holding pattern and wait for the preseason to begin. Many teams will likely want to see how some of their blue line prospects fair before making a deal.
Quest for a Center
That likely means that this could be the Rangers roster heading into camp. It certainly doesn’t mean it will the roster competing for a Stanley Cup in April.
While interest in Tyler Bozak likely still remains, a lot of the chatter appears to have cooled down significantly not that the Rangers have re-signed Zibanejad and opted to keep Staal (for now).
