Rangers Roundup: Talbot trade coming, Norwegian vacation, Prospect notes and more

Talbot and MSL (getty)

The offseason isn’t even officially a week old for the NHL and the Rangers just keep making news. Of course the hottest topic is Cam Talbot and what the Rangers may be able to fetch for him.

Here’s some of the latest:
As we noted yesterday, Darren Dreger believes the Rangers will hit a home run on Talbot trade. As many as 6 teams are in (EDM, BUF, SJS, CGY, DAL, FL) and Sather has multiple offers on the table. SNY RANGERS noted this today.

Reports of the Oilers 16th overall pick being up for grabs don’t seem to have Newsday’s Steve Zipay buying it.

FullTilt Rangers Take: A 2nd round pick is possible along with a good prospect. Yet, that doesn’t sound like a home run to me. The Oilers, Sabres, and Sharks all have picks early in the second so it is possible (33,31,39 respectively). If a deal happens before the draft, then I feel a 2nd might be all the Rangers can get. Should a deal happen at the draft, who knows what could be in the works.

National Lampoon’s Norwegian Vacation?

Carl Hagelin, Chris Kreider, Derick Brassard and Kevin Hayes are in Norway to play in Mats Zuccarello‘s charity game. Hilarity ensues.

“PROSPECT”ing

As per Larry Brooks, and really no shock here, the Rangers are out on FA Defenseman Mike Reilly. Expect him to sign with the Blackhawks, and possibly Minnesota.

Rangers prospect, Pavel Buchnevich revealed why he decided to stay in Russia.

FullTilt Rangers Take: Yes, this is a perfectly logical answer but let’s not pretend that he and his agent didn’t have discussion with the Rangers organization on is chances to make the team next season. Good news is, it’s only for 1 more year so they must be aware that the 20 year old has a legit chance in 2016.

The Enigma that is Sean Avery

I’m not sure what to make of Sean Avery anymore. From what I gathered talking to former hockey players, he was a Grade A jerk. In his latest piece for The Players’ Tribune, he basically admits it. Still he presents a whole different side of himself and it makes a great read. For this latest Rangers Roundup, I selected to relay his reasons for retiring.

[su_quote cite=”Sean Avery” url=”https://www.theplayerstribune.com/sean-avery-why-i-retired-life-after-hockey/”]I decided to retire in 2012 because the game was no longer fun for me. Sure, I loved being on the ice, making a great play, putting the puck in the net — and winning. I did not love the abuse I got from my coach. I did not love sitting around in the locker room talking about cars and wives and girlfriends — or about hiding your girlfriend from your wife. And difficult though this may be for fans to understand, some nights, I did not love all the thumping music and swirling lights announcing “The New York Rangers!” as we skated out to play Game X in our 82-game season. Some nights, you just can’t find that extra gear no matter how loud the arena is.[/su_quote]

If you have the time, give his story a read here.
