Rangers Roundup: The blockbuster that wasn’t and Lundqvist lobbies for Zuccarello
The latest news and buzz around the New York Rangers.
Hank lobbies for Zucc
Henrik Lundqvist and Mats Zuccarello are more than just teammates. Any Rangers fan knows that the two have grown very close and have played charity tournaments together.
Yesterday, Lundqvist made a passionate but realistic plea for the Rangers to keep Zuccarello.
This prompted me to ask the following question and then receive a prompt response from Roy Kvatningen, a Norwegian reporter with ties to Zuccarello.
The NHL trade deadline is February 25th.
The Blockbuster that wasn’t!
Larry Brooks’ latest Slap Shots confirms that the Rangers and Oilers were very close to a blockbuster deal in 2016.
The blockbuster, Slap Shots has confirmed with multiple sources, would have been with the Rangers and it would have sent Ryan McDonagh to the Oilers in exchange for the fourth-overall selection in the draft the Blueshirts intended to use on Clayton Keller of the USNDT. There would have been additional components to the trade, but that would have formed the foundation of it.

Edmonton’s GM, Peter Chiarelli opted to keep the pick and used it on Jesse Puljujärvi. He then decided to trade Taylor Hall for Adam Larsson. Hall has since won a Hart Trophy and Chiarelli is now looking for a new job.
What has me scratching my head is this; if Chiarelli was looking to trade for Ryan McDonagh, why wouldn’t he offer Hall for him? And if he did, why didn’t Jeff Gorton take it?
While Brooks mentions some other talks the Rangers had with other teams, this question is never addressed. We will never know I guess, but what would the Rangers have looked like with Taylor Hall on the team?
One can only wonder.
