Rangers Snap Skid, Beat Islanders On Road 2-1

The hatchet has finally been buried, as the Rangers finally win a game on Brooklyn, as they defeated the Islanders 2-1. Mats Zuccarello scored late in the third period to put the Rangers up, and lo and behold, the lead was held and the Blueshirts registered their first W of 2019, snapping a five game win streak. Here’s our recap.

Although the effort wasn’t a full one, the Rangers managed to pull one out against the streaking Islanders to take one at Barclays on Saturday afternoon. In the last fifteen matchups, the Islanders were 13-2-0. The Rangers were winless in seven games (one OTL) at Barclays until Saturday afternoon. Although the Rangers amassed 12 penalty minutes, they were able to hold off the Islanders for most of the game.

Filip Chytil got the Rangers on the board after a strong effort to enter the zone and play set up by Boo Nieves. In spurts, the Rangers controlled most of the tempo, and took advantage of an Islanders team that was aloof for most of the afternoon. Mats Zuccarello netted the game winner as the puck pinballed off him in the third period to get past Robin Lehner to seal the victory.

Alexandar Georgiev looked solid as always, as he made 24 saves on 25 shots against. Georgiev seems to perform well against the Islanders as he was a huge part in yesterday’s win.

“We were determined to get a win here, finally, and I thought we played right from minute one. We really battled hard,” said Mika Zibanejad, who assisted on Mats Zuccarello’s game-winner with 5:05 left in the third period.

“I think it’s been talked about for a few games now,” Zibanejad said of the streak. “We were aware of it, but you’ve got to treat every game the same. Just the fact that we lost the last game Thursday, at home, and the way we played in the third [in that game], we really carried the momentum into this game and we did a good job of sticking to it for 60 minutes.” Mark Hermann/Newsday

Rangers next matchup is on Sunday at 6PM, where they enter the Nationwide Arena in Columbus as they take on the Blue Jackets. LETS GO RANGERS.
