Rangers Strike First But Fall Late To Ducks 4-3 In Shootout
After a thrilling win in San Jose, the Rangers headed to Anaheim for an afternoon matinee against the Ducks. Artemi Panarin and Mika Zibanejad stole the show right off the bat but it wasn’t enough as the Rangers fell to the Ducks late 4-3 in a shootout. Here’s our recap.
Before the game, it was announced that Henrik Lundqvist would start in net, along with Marc Staal and Brendan Lemieux being slated into the lineup after being tabbed as game time decisions. Micheal Haley was the lone scratch.
Right off the bat, Mika Zibanejad nets a goal just ten seconds into the game to put the Rangers ahead quickly. This goal is the second quickest in Rangers history and is only one second behind the quickest. Ron Duguay in 1980 and Jim Wiemer in 1985 have the record for all time quickest goal to start a game, clocking in at 9 seconds. Not too long after, at 3:59 of the first, Artemi Panarin added another tally making it 2-0.
Anaheim would get within one towards the end of the first and would tie the game at 2 in the second period. Henrik Lundqvist was deked out of position and left an empty net open for Erik Gudbrandon to net it in. The Rangers initial intensity from the start had died down but stellar stops by Henrik Lundqvist and John Gibson along with strong defensive efforts by both teams kept the game knotted at 2 going into the third.
Just 1:14 into the third period, Mika Zibanejad struck again and scored a beauty of a goal from a rush to the net after receiving a beautiful pass from Tony DeAngelo. A late period penalty by Brady Skjei led to a game tying power play goal from Hampus Lindholm. A semi eventful overtime, which included a strong chance for Mika Zibanejad to win it and score a hat trick was denied by John Gibson kept it tied at 2 and ultimately led to a shootout.
Artemi Panarin shot first for New York but was denied by Gibson. Mika Zibanejad was next for New York and scored off a beautiful move to fool Gibson. Ondrej Kase buried a backhand on Lundqvist to keep the shootout tied at 1. Jakob Silfverberg would score on the Ducks next chance in the shootout and ultimately won the game for Anaheim.
This was the final game of a four game west coast swing and coming out of it, New York garnered 5 out of the possible 8 points.
