Dreger added that Tavares can still keep his options open if talks break down between Tavares and the new Islanders President of Hockey Ops Lou Lamoriello. According to Dreger, Lamoriello and Tavares have been talking “on a constant basis,” with Lamoriello sharing his plans for the Islanders moving forward.
While signing Tavares in the offseason would certainly make some noise around the NHL, the Rangers should not spend too much time focusing on the Islanders captain. If there is a real opportunity to bring Tavares to Madison Square Garden, then, by all means, should Jeff Gorton and company go for it. But this summer should be about figuring out which young guys will be able to contribute for the Rangers in the long-term.
