Rumor: Cam Talbot to Edmonton for 2nd Rd pick (33) and Martin Marincin
As Cam Talbot trade rumors heat up, the most likely offer on the table from the Oilers is a package of their 1st pick in the 2nd round (33rd overall) and prospect Martin Marincin.
Edmonton Journal’s Jim Matheson noted this a few days ago:
If Edm in on Cam Talbot, can’t see them offering more than 33rd overall pick and, say, D-man Martin Marincin.#oilers.

Mark Spector seems to be following suit.
[su_quote cite=”Mark Spector (Sportsnet)” url=”https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/top-nhl-unrestricted-free-agents-goaltenders/”]Edmonton has been lining up for Talbot for months, and will part with defenceman Martin Marincin and perhaps the 33rd pick overall. Someone could come in higher, but that offer verges on over-paying already. The Oilers will give up more than most teams, because they’re more desperate in goal. The inconsistent Lehtonen is unmovable, with a $5.9-million cap hit for three more years. That’s a big buy-out for a lower revenue team like Dallas.[/su_quote]
Who is Martin Marincin?
Marincin is a tall and lanky defenseman who is not overly physical but skilled. According to several scouting sites he is a smooth skater with good puck moving ability. He has been used as a power play quarterback but that may not translate at the NHL level.
[su_quote cite=”Hockey’s Future” url=”https://www.hockeysfuture.com/prospects/martin_marincin/”]Long-term Marincin doesn’t figure to have much of an offensive component to his game nor is he overly punishing. His size and reach suggest he can be an effective middle pairing defensive defenseman in the future.[/su_quote]
It looks like this has a high probability of going down, unless Buffalo or San Jose ups their offer. Marincin would certainly fit on the Rangers blue liner and could make Kevin Klein expendable if Matt Hunwick hasn’t done that already.
