With reports coming out of today’s practice that Marc Staal would be back for tomorrow night’s game against the Canadiens, the Rangers needed to free up a roster spot for the veteran defenseman. Sproul has performed admirably in his time with the Blueshirts, assisting on two goals for his only offensive contributions in the four games on the Rangers blue line. Sproul didn’t do anything to “earn” his demotion but is the result of Jeff Gorton and Alain Vigneault not wanting to stick $5.7 million in the press box.
