Arizona Coyotes GM Don Maloney has informed the media that center Martin Hanzal will have surgery on his ailing back.

UPDATE: G.M. Don Maloney says center Martin Hanzal will have back surgery and the likelihood of him playing again this season is “remote.”

It was rumored earlier that the Rangers were highly interested in acquiring the big center, but this news kills any possibility of a trade.

The Rangers are a win now team and need help for this season. What this does is certainly increase the odds that the Rangers may look for a cheaper option like Mike Santorelli in the near future.
