Shattenkirk And Lundqvist Power Rangers To Shootout Victory

On First Responders Night at Madison Square Garden, the New York Rangers welcomed the Gabriel Landeskog and the Colorado Avalanche.

Coming into the game, Colorado came in with a 3-1-1 record, which put them third in the Central Division. The Rangers were coming off of a close game and a tough loss to Edmonton last Saturday and sat dead last in the Metropolitan Division. After a back and forth game, with goaltenders Henrik Lundqvist and Semyon Varlamov standing on their heads in regulation and OT, Kevin Shattenkirk netted the shootout winner to send the Garden Faithful home happy. Here are some thoughts from last night’s game.

Buch Scratched, Chytil on Wing – Before the game, it was announced that Pavel Buchnevich would not play and would be a healthy scratch, as Cody McLeod would fill in on the fourth line in his place. This move is consistent with what David Quinn has preached throughout camp and for the first part of this season. Adam McQuaid, who had a rocky game on Saturday was also scratched. Next, the Rangers announced that they would play Filip Chytil on the wing for last night’s contest, with Kevin Hayes and Mats Zuccarello as his linemates. Chytil was a +1 with one shot on goal, all while looking a lot more comfortable out on the ice and was very noticeable and engaged.

Playing Well And More Shots – Rangers coach David Quinn made it a point for his team to shoot the puck more. That was evident right off the bat, as the Rangers kept the simple play and threw it on net for the majority of the game, outshooting Colorado 43-33. A lot of the offensive chances that were created were due to a simple shot on goal like the Kevin Shattenkirk shot that was deflected by Chris Kreider for a Power Play goal in the first period. Overall, the team played well as a unit once again and seemingly made the adjustments to their game that were not evident on Saturday. They stayed on the puck, got it to the net and held a potent Colorado offense to just two goals.

Old? Henrik Lundqvist Does Not Know What That Means – Before the end of the second period, Henrik Lundqvist stretched out and made an incredible save on Matt Nieto with the blocker. Needless to say, this is an early candidate for save of the year, as Henrik continues to defy father time with his stellar play in net.

Shattenkirk Wins It In The Shootout – “Local boy wins game for childhood team.” That’s what I think the headline of any of the papers should be for the morning edition as Kevin Shattenkirk netted the game-winning goal in the shootout. After being scratched for the previous two games, Shattenkirk looked competent in his return to the lineup. Netting two assists and the game winner in the shootout, Shattenkirk is trying to show us all that he belongs in the lineup.

Next Game: The Blueshirts will look to make it two in a row on Wednesday when they face the Capitals in Washington DC. Puck drops at 7!
