Should the Rangers go after Habs Captain, Max Pacioretty

The Montreal Canadiens are moving on from their 29 year old captain. Habs GM, Marc Bergevin will not be offering a contract extension to Max Pacioretty, making him a UFA next summer.

Moving Patches

At the NHL draft it was believed that Pacioretty was traded to L.A. but the deal fell through due to the inability of getting an extension worked out. The thought around many hockey circles is that the Connecticut native would like to stay in the Eastern Conference.

Pacioretty grew up as a Rangers fan and one of his fondest memories was playing on the Garden ice as a kid. He also recalls the 1994 run and Messier’s game 6 guarantee with fondness. So, could the Rangers make sense?

Rangers Captaincy Vacant

The Rangers have been without a captain since trading Ryan McDonagh. As the Erik Karlsson saga has dragged on, former Rangers captain, Ryan Callahan has been linked to coming back. The belief is that Callahan would automatically be given the “C”.

Using that line of thinking, why not go younger and add some legit scoring punch by trading for Max Pacioretty. The Canadiens are seeking young prospects and draft picks which the Rangers have in abundance. If that’s the case, the move could make a lot of sense for the long term as well as the short term.
