The Comeback Kids Erase Four Goal Deficit In Montreal
Following Friday night’s stinker in Ottawa, the Rangers needed a strong effort against the Canadiens. They didn’t start the way they wanted, but they certainly finished how they wanted with six goals over the final 30 minutes of play to end up on the winning side of a 6-5 score line.
Filip Chytil – The Czech forward got the scoring started for the Blueshirts, taking Artemiy Panarin’s cross-ice pass and burying it behind Carey Price in the second period. The goal was Chytil’s seventh of the year in just 12 games since being recalled from Hartford.
Pavel Buchnevich – After a rough game in Ottawa, Buchnevich was able to get the second Blueshirts goal. It wasn’t pretty, but the puck came off the stick of Buchnevich and caromed off of the Canadiens defender and into the net to cut the deficit to 4-2. The goal came in the Russian’s 200th career game and was his fourth tally of the season.
Brendan Lemieux – It was a big night for Lemieux, who recorded a pair of goals, including the game tying marker with the Rangers shorthanded. Lemieux’s first goal of the game came in the second period, when he redirected Adam Fox’s point shot as the Blueshirts man-advantage expired.
For an encore, in front of his famous father no less, tied the game for the Rangers with the team shorthanded. With Panarin in the box, the Rangers got an odd-man rush. Brett Howden found Lemieux breaking to the far post, and the rugged forward tied the game at five.
Artemiy Panarin – His points streak ended in Ottawa, but Panarin started a new one in a big way in Montreal. The Russian recorded a goal and an assist, giving him 27 points on the season in just 21 games. Panarin’s goal, unlike that of his fellow Russian Buchnevich, was a beauty. The Rangers went to work below the goal line, and the puck went from Ryan Strome to Chris Kreider to Panarin and into the back of the net.
Jacob Trouba – It was a rough start to this one for Trouba, but it was his goal in the third period that put the Rangers ahead for good. After Strome won the faceoff to Trouba, the defenseman shot the puck through a maze of bodies. Carey Price got a piece of it, but the puck fluttered through and over the goal line.
Slow Start, Big Finish – Friday night’s game was one to forget as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, the Rangers carried over their poor effort through the first 23 minutes of this one. The defense was nowhere to be found, the goaltending was shoddy, and the Blueshirts were unable to take advantage of their scoring chances. But midway through the game, they were able to flip the switch, and put in 37 minutes of strong hockey to come out victorious. It’s great that they got the win, but the Blueshirts need to play a full 60 minutes to have sustained success.
Alexandar Georgiev – It wasn’t a great night for Georgiev, who, despite getting the win, allowed five goals on 43 shots. He’ll probably want at least one of them back, but when the team needed him to make a save, he was able to secure the win for his team. Georgiev has had two poor starts in recent games, with the other coming in the 9–3 thrashing in Tampa Bay. Hopefully, Georgiev turns it around soon.
