The Origin of the Broadway Hat and other Rangers observations
We all know Brad Richards introduced the Broadway Hat, worn by the game’s MVP as designated by the players. What we don’t know is exactly how he obtained the now famous Hat that has it’s own Twitter Account with over 21,000 followers.
Gary Buiso has unraveled that mystery in today’s NY POST. According to his story, in September of 2011 the Blueshirts played a game in Sweden. Afterwards they went to a nigh club and encountered Helena Erikson who was wearing the snazzy headwear.
“They probably thought it was fun to take that hat off me,” Erikson told the Post. “Finally, I said, ‘Buy your own hat!’ ” Brad Richards then did just that and offered her $100 on the spot for the hat, which only cost her $18. Not a bad return on investment I might add.

GAME ONE TAKEAWAYS
1. The Rangers dominated game one. We maybe couldn’t see by the score, but the Blueshirts only gave up 24 shots on the day. Steven Stamkos (7 points last 5 games) who was red-hot coming in only mustered 1 shot as Marc Staal shut him down.
2. Kevin Hayes on the top line is fantastic, but I think moving Marty St. Louis to the 3rd line was not necessarily a demotion. Alain Vigneault put together a small but incredibly fast line to face Tampa’s bigger and less mobile defense. That line generated 7 shots for the game and cycled the puck effectively. MSL did not get a shot in the game but shanked 2 glorious chances. The dam is about to break for him.
3. Jesper Fast is the Yin to Chris Kreider’s Yang. Seriously, Kreider is a beast of a player but we know that he sometimes falls asleep on his defensive responsibilities. Having Jesper Fast who is better suited as a 3rd liner in the future, provides AV that safety valve for this line with Derek Stepan. Fast is smart and quick on the puck, but doesn’t have the hands or shot to be a top six forward. With Mats Zuccarello out however, he has fit like a glove and allows the Rangers to throw 3 balanced scoring lines.
4. Shhh, but J.T. Miller centering Tanner Glass and James Sheppard has really impressed me. They played a little over 7 minutes together and had 3 shots and 8 hits. They certainly hung in there and generated some offense as well.
5. The Rangers are undefeated against Ben Bishop in the playoffs. Yes, we made a big issue with Bishop’s perfect 8-0 regular season record against the Rangers in his career, but he is now winless against them in the playoffs. Here’s the deal, Bishop was the main reason the Rangers didn’t win this game 4-1. He was solid, but the Blueshirts have now pierced the armor and I expect more goals for them in Game 2.
